All I see is a police officer doing a very difficult and dangerous job and another celebrity claiming special treatment. Wah wah wah. I'm more concerned with the policman's saftey than someone who's out partying until the last minute before Mom passes on.
This is the kind of behavior that gives cops a bad name.

At no point did the cop know he was a professional athlete.

He pulled him over in a hospital lot, cops are paid to make quick judgement calls on situations and clearly this guy make the wrong call.

This guy is not meant to be a cop if he makes bad calls like this.
Can him! why is he on paid desk duty?

Last week, in Memphis, a white sheriff pulled over a car. Inside a black man was rushing his dying mother to a hospital that was less than a mile away. Rather than escort them to the hospital, he wrote a ticket, waited for an ambulance and watched her die in the car. Just because you wear a badge, doesn't necessarily mean you're qualified for it or deserve it.

Funny, this is the only site i've visited that has dumba@@es siding with the cop.
Chicago is racist to the core, even as cops are robbing and stealing from white people they will continue to back them as long as they continue to treat minorities like crap.
You would think Chicago was a city in rural Mississippi with the mentality on exhibition here.
By the way, cops don't come to the rescue or prevent most crimes; they most often arrive after the crime has taken place, look it up!
Sad, but so true. The defence of cops around here is disgusting - story after story of police abuse and improper behavior (to put it kindly)- yet people still jump to the defence of a pipsqueak with a badge and gun. Folks, you may not realize it - but we are getting closer and closer to a police state in this country. You need to speak up for your rights rather than blindly defending the racist low-lifes that are hired apparently to harrass the citizens of this country.

1. The police officer could have LISTENED to the people - it would have taken 2 minutes to call the hospital - or... better yet, follow them there (or lead them)
2. We don't know if the man pulled out the "celebrity" card.
3. Yes - cancer does take time - but in the end, as in most deaths... there comes a point where your body just gives out and sometimes it is very sudden. They may have had children they had to be home with. Maybe they were told she would make it through the weekend? Maybe there was a sudden complication...
4. A car full of family members, driving with hazard lights on toward the hospital would certainly make their story more believable.
5.(not that this was part of your post, but...) we can't play the race card here either, we don't know the officer's race. Why do people immediately assume he's white?

In no way am I a cop-hater (my other half is a D*** good one...) however, police officers are supposed to be able to remain calm and composed while they determine what's happening. I just have a hard time believing that this officer couldn't see that a car full of family members (probably in tears and obviously very upset) did not warrant listening a little better and using a little better judgment. I just know my man and how he operates and I'm pretty sure he'd give a good listen and exercise better judgment (I hope so! I'm going to run this by him).

Although, the flip side - we weren't there and it's likely they bombarded him in their justified hysteria and he likely felt threatened; football player are quite large - especially if they jumped out of the car yelling at him. In hindsight, I can understand why both parties reacted how they did.

Of course though, it's ALWAYS so much fun to blame the cops.

After reading this article and a corresponding report on another news agency, there seems to be a difference here than simply a NFL player not recieive your "VIP" treatment. The nurse was out there telling the poolice officer that the mother-in-law of the NFL player was literally on her death bed. In fact they blue coded her three times in order to keep her alive so the family could see her before she passed.
The fact remains that the nurse (a person entrusted to save lives) was telling a police officer (a person entrusted to protect life) that it was necessary for this family to see their loved one before she died. In my opinion I don't see the difference between running a red light for this, to running a red light with a pregnant women in labor in the passenger seat.
This officer is showing not only a complete lack of judgment, but is showing a complete lack of upstanding character and compasion. I feel sincerely sorry for this family in mourning.
The difference in running a red life with a woman in labor is that someone in the car needs medical assistance. No one in this car needed medical help. If he would have waited 30 seconds for the light to change, this would have all been avoided but somehow this is now the cops fault.

The police officer was doing his job, what he is paid to do. If Mr Moats wouldnt have run his mouth so much and gave the officer attitude, maybe the officer would have accepted his story and let him go, but he just had to keep running his mouth. This officer was in no way out of line.

I don't see this as a racial issue at all. This is just bad judgment by a bad police officer.

Sadly, as much as the DPD is (and should be) apologizing... I'm afraid this Powell guy is representative of two-thirds of the police force in America -- lacking common sense and always hiding behind the excuse of "just doing my job." I know police officers, I have friends who are police officers... most of them are nice people, but when they put on the uniform, they don a cloak of arrogance & power with little regard for the public whom they serve. But what to expect from the police with all of the thugs on the street... if I had to deal with criminals and gangbangers 8 hours a day, I'd probably lose respect for mankind, too.

Pooh - this comments section is on the World Wide Web. There is no function that deletes comments from IP addresses outside the Chicago area.

In fact if you looked at some of the addresses from comments supporting the stupid police officer you will see they are from areas other than Chicago.

I do agree that an uncomftoably high percentage of e-Chicago Tribune commentors tend to be to the right of Adolph. To say this says anything about physical Chicago flies in the face of all reason.

Here's the million dollar question:

Did he get to see momma die or not?

If yes, S*T*F*U about it.

If no, shame on the cop.

Yeah darn it. Those young people who have probably not experienced death of a close loved one did not behave perfectly. So that means the cop - presumably trained on how to deal with humans in emergency circumstances gets a walk.

After reading the article and reviewing the video tape, here are my thoughts;
1. Everyone reacts differently in an emergency situation and those emotions will increase when a loved one is involved.
2. I feel the officer "prolonged" the process by repeatdly demanding that the NFL Player "shut up" (when in fact he was handing the police officer the insurance/license information he requested.) That in itself was unprofessional conduct and only adds fuel to the fire.
3. The whole situation transpired in the hospital parking lot(not neccessarily my first choice of a place to run if you're trying to avoid the police).
4. Once the NFL Player story (dying loved one) was confirmed and re-confirmed by hospital personnel, officer still continued his "prolonged" process of writing a ticket.
5. I understand and appreciate the fact that police officers risk their lives everday to ensure our safety and that they have to make split-second decisions at the drop of dime BUT I feel this officer did not examine the physical surroundings, consider the level of emotions, show
consideration (even if he didn't believe the guys story)or even listen to other public safety people (hospital staff) confirm that love one was dying.

His actions and conduct was not warranted for this particular situation. I hope the(police officer) personally apologizes to the family.

Hhhhhhmmmmm...

Let's cogitate on this for a moment.

- The car was pulled over in hospital parking area - virtually at the emergency room door.
- The driver and other family members explained to the officer they were trying to get to the dying mother's/stepmother's bedside before she expired.
- Another officer and hospital staff tried to reason with the officer.

Lastly, even the Police Chief of the Dallas PD has publicly stated the officer badly mishandled this situtation, AND the ticket written by this empty-headed, unfeeling, "by-the-book" simpleton has been dismissed.

Yet, we have an assortment of warped, deranged nutbags, imbeciles, hate-mongers and people who are just flat-out ignorant loudly proclaiming the officer did nothing wrong.

When reading these "the officer was right" posts you're left staring at the screen and wondering "Can anyone really be this stupid?"

Indescribable idiocy!!
