Faneca Disappointed To Leave Steelers

Not many athletes in this day and age spend their entire careers with one team and in one city, Alan Faneca wanted to do just that.

It's hard to imagine that where losing the Best offensive Gard we have the Leader of the offensive line. I know the Steelers don't pay big money but they need to start saving the main leader on the team if they want to surve in that division. I love my steeler with faneca on the line 11 times he's been all pro and still in his prime how in the world can you let him go. i know you did it with others and they all came back to bite you in some form or fashion. Please do this one thing and try to bend alittle and pay the man, Please!.

I'm a die hard Steeler fan and they never did like to play their players. Also they need a good line to protect Big Ben. So sign Faneca to a good contract.

well that sucks to hear that faneca is leaving. The O-line is going to have to look for a new leader on the line.

I liked him, but I don't like greed. If he can't afford to support his family on earnings of over 5 million a year, then I guess it's time he moves on. If he truly wanted to stay a Steeler, he could've accepted the contract offered.

Football players' salaries are getting beyond ridiculous--guys used to say they'd play for nothing (and they almost did) just because they loved the game...guess there aren't any of those kind left.

Joey left because of money issues, and I have a feeling he'd undo what he did in a heartbeat if he could. Sometimes there are more important things than money.

Good post SteelersWoman. Joey will always be a Steeler...he has regrets & so will Alan.
I read yesterday that Faneca may be having a hard time getting what he wants. His age, 31, is against him. He wants around 49m for a 7 year contract. Wow !!!! Goodbye AF. Good luck !!! I will miss you but....

I have to say if the diff is really huge, like what the steelers would have paid randel el and the 22 million he got, I don't blame the athelete. Same goes with Joey, he cashed in big time. But with Faneca I think the diff is not that great a few million over the course of the contract. Such huge salaries are hard to imagine but I guess they follow the money. Bettis took a pay cut, but he is a remarkable person.

The years don't mean they expect the contract to be played all the way out. A 7 year contract is so they can spread the Bonus money over 7 years to take less of a cap hit. Therefore a person with a 7 year contract can get twice as much in bonus as say a 3 year contract bonus.

I thought for sure the cardinals would make a play for him. I can see the jets going for it though, they need some FA help to knock off the pats

Cards are trying to resign Fitzgerald. Apparently don't have enough $ to sign AF. Once again he's disappointed, but at least he's going to get paid. 20m gauranteed plus salary, bonuses, etc.

You know, there are times that business is not just business in sports. Being a player for a team, and going through all the highs and lows that Faneca has, performing at a top level througout, being a part of history (member of the all-time team) and tremendous success to me would mean you sign him. He is the Pittsburgh Steelers. He just made the probowl. Maybe the money is high, but your not just paying for the future, your rewarding your most consistant star over the last ten years. The Rooney family needs to bite the bullet once in a while for the right people. I would want 22 Alan Fanecas on my team.

Yes Jopa. AF has given alot to this team. So has Rod Woodson, Carnell Lake, how many others???
As our buddy Bob Roberts has pointed out, the Bus took a cut to stay & play. Its been reported that Tom Brady even made concessions on his contracts to help his team stay in the hunt. However, I must say loyalty & dedication to your
employer on an individual basis is becoming increasingly rare. Those of us living where we live is a perfect example going back to the '70s and '80s with the Steel Mills. Business is Business. They are in it to make a profit as cheaply as possible. They have the power because they have the loot in most cases. They are more worried about their family than yours.

At least the FO is'nt trying to hold him up with a tag.

Show me the $$$$$. Pay me what I'm worth. Thats been my MO for the past 20 or so.....
IF I did'nt get it or promises were'nt kept I moved on. Thats what AFs doing. I wish him the best wherever he goes. Thanks Alan!

This is a little different than past players I think. It's pretty widely accepted that Faneca and Hutchinson were and are the best 2 guards over the last 10 years. Hutch and even others made alot more money than Alan over that time. I think it's time to say whatever Hutch will end up making is what Alan should make. A pay scale for players should be instituted to get rid of all the jealousy amongst players.

Finally, the Faneca saga will be over. He gets the money he deserves and we won't have to here about him anymore.

Unless the players that replace him don't measure up as well as the offensive line as a whole. Then you'll hear about the demise of the line starting with the retirement of Hartings, the loss of Faneca, the health of Smith, and the inability to replace the players for the first time in 35 years.
