It totally depends on the kid. I wouldn't want to get a phone for the kid if it is not necessary. I also wouldn't want to get one for him if he didn't behave responsibly enough to use it when he should and not as a distraction at school.

At 10, my kid neither needs one nor is he responsible enough. That may be different for other people, or they may have different circumstances than I do.

I think they should have one when they start to drive. That way you can always check and see where they're at.

I agree with you. My daughter is 10 and she has been bugging me for a cell phone because all of her friends have one. I told her when she can make sure her room is clean and her CDs are put away in their cases then I would consider it. What a mom thing to say. LOL

When I do decide to get her one I will probably take a look at those phone with the GPS and only certain numbers that she can dial out to. Can't remember what there called.

I think they do make phones just for kids now. I haven't looked into them really either, since I'm not ready to buy one. I was shocked when my kid told me some of his friends had phones. Who the hell do you need to call at that age?

Yes that is how I felt also. But kids seemed to be into things much earlier than when I was a kid. Like my daughter is very picky about what she wears. I don't remember caring that much about the "cool" clothes at 10. Maybe as a teen but it seems that kids are growing up much faster than we did which is a scary thing for parents to deal with.

One night when my son was 15, he came home about 2 hours later than he was supposed to. He scared the heck out of me cuz I didn't know where he was at.

The next day I went and got the both of us cell phones. He was so excited until I said...

"Don't look at this as a good thing, think of this as a very, very, very long leash! Hahahah.

Yes indeed, when my son is a little older that is actually my motivation for getting him one.

What did we all do before cell phones?

Before Internet?
Before Text Messaging?
Before Ipods?
Before Palm Pilots?
Before Balcberries?

We had to get up to turn off the tv and sit by the phone jack to talk on the Princess phone.Unless we had a realy long phone cord. And had to tell em' to hang on so we could flip over the cassette. We also usually got caught passing notes in class. How embarrassing was that?!

LOL, I can see it now. Totally worth the price of the new phone.

I know! Remember when you had to memorize people's phone numbers, and if you needed to call someone while you were out, you had to have change for the phone? And I remember when VHS was just too expensive for my family. And we only had three channels on the TV. LOL

I imagine that once my daughter (who is now 9) starts going out on her own I may get her a "kid" cell phone with limited services.....But I won't know for sure until the time comes......

Anywho, there are kids her age that already have a cell phone....and she has asked when she can get one......to which we replied "not for a very long time, you don't need one".

I see your logic...but I would want the kid to be used to the phone before driving...then the newness will have won off and hopefully driving will be more important than driving and talking on the phone.

I have no kids, so I am just winging it here. Seems to me it should be on a case by case basis. A more mature kid would handle using a cell phone better than immature one.
