I am in favor of cutting spending AND no tax increases. I earn a good paycheck because I work. When I go to Butera to buy food, I look for sales so I can streatch my dollar, I have to live within my means. The "Government" needs to do the same.

The problem is our elected officials, Reps and Dems. Bush spent like a drunk and Obama is showing no restraint in his spending. The stimilus is a joke much like the need to go into Iraq was. Both ended up benefiting corporations at the expense of the Federal Budget.

I know most of you are focused on cutting spending and no tax increases but this focus is like shutting the barn door after the horse has already left. The money has been spent and we have a huge deficit. With this current attitude, the only other solution is for the Fed to print more money to pay the bills off and end up devaluing the Dollar like Germany did with the Mark after WWII.

If you have children or plan to, you should be frightened of the America they will be inheriting.

Lord Obama does not care... he is in this to win his way for his people... Unions, Corps, and buddies alone the way

Any one with half a brain knows, there is no way to pay for all this...

and with health care and now maybe energy... he wants more and more power and yes... debt too... and no one is stepping up to the plate and calling him on this...

Where is the Media... no where

Where is Congress... in bed with him

Where are the elite... love Obama so he can do no no no wrong...

Where are we... too busy to bother...

Sad state of affairs for all of us...

Traitor! America Hater!

How dare you criticize the Messiah Obama! He said that we'll have a budget surplus years ahead! Don't you believe him?

All you need to do is keep voting Democrats into office. Don't worry your little head about responsibility or consequences.

When the time comes, the media will sing along with the Democrats it's somehow Bush's fault.

We are in the middle of a
huge recession and a huge demographic crisis with the aging of America, both of which began more than six months ago, crs2000. Deficit spending is not optional at this point. Maybe we can retrench (e.g., health care and energy reforms) to gain efficiencies for the future, but for now we are going to have to eat the bill.

What would you do?

This is the sort of hard hitting editorial one expects from the Tribune...no wonder you are in bankruptcy.

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. I am especially sore about the "Bush spent like a drunken sailor" crowd. Precisely, Congress spent. Bush, striving for an era of cooperation and good will, failed to veto. Yes, he's responsible for NCLB, and yes, he's responsible for the war which Congress underwrote, and much of this worked out badly, but fair is fair.

Both parties have failed miserably in containing spending and not being brutally honest with the American people. Even at current debt levels entitlements are going to have to be reduced substantially and taxes will have to increase for everyone.

The only thing to criticize more about those currently in power is that they seem bent on an expotentially greater amount of spending and deficit spending, as well as accellerating its pace at which is created compared with any other administration in history expect during WWII. Amazing!

Democrats: "It's not deficit spending when we do it -- it's an 'investment in our future'."

Sure! Just like it wasn't tax evasion when Tiny Tim Geithner did it, it wasn't racism when Judge Sotomayor did it, and it isn't fascism when The American Jesus in the Oval Office did it to Chrysler and GM.

Consider what they DO, not what they SAY. It's the only way to retain your sanity.

So what would you have the government do? I tlloks to me like they are doing a lot to face the economic issues, and the hurricane. How you can say they are sitting on the beach drinking beer is beyond me. What would you have them do? Cut spending? How about some specific suggestions. Ignore the auto industry? Ignore the banking crisis? Now that is sitting on the beach drinking beer.

What would I have the Govt do? First, let the corporations go bankrupt, including GM and AIG. No bailouts. Let the bankruptcy courts do their work. Second, revive the "Resolution Trust Corporation". Remember that? The S&L Crisis back in the 1980's? The RTC worked because a market for illiquid assets was created and assets got shifted to their best use at lower valuations. That's what I would have the Govt do.

Don't you worry America.

Now that we have sitted Stuart Smally to the Senate, he is going to hypnotize the nation (a la SNL) into believing:
"Everything is going to be all right.
We are fine, doggone it."

Boy am I glad you aren't in charge. We're already at 9.5% unemployment even with a soft, gov't-supported landing for GM. And if you had let AIG go, you'd have seen the whole financial system melt down; that's pretty much agreed by people on both sides of the political fence. Laissez faire may be a good general principle, but it is not the answer to everything.

Absolutely right. Spending when you have no choice is not irresponsible. Spending when you have absolutely no need to do so (attacking Iraq) is moronic.
