I'll be honest, I've compared the long range forecasts of The Farmers Almanac, local stations, the NWS and TWC over the past several years and The Farmers Almanac has come closer to getting it right than any of the others the majority of the time.

Good ,is Winter my favorite time of year. We need a hard cold winter to kill off flu virus and other nasty stuff. And the more snow the better, last year absolutely sucked for snow, so bring it on baby. People around here think 2 inches is a lot. Now thats FUNNY!!

1 Either way St. Louisans don't handle winter very well, and why should we...snow never sticks around long enough to have a "winterfest" like in Minneapolis...so snow is a nuisance. If it's not snowing, there's sleet or Frz rain...no fun ! Then it may or may not get bitter cold...and when it does, who wants to pull out their 10 or 15 yr old "real winter coat"...it's a fashion no no. In St. Louis we have to ramp up for all kinds of crap...combine that with early sunsets before 5pm BLAH !...at least in Florida it's warm when the sun goes down...in St. Louis it might be 65 degrees...it might be zero with a wind chill.....it frustrates everyone ! So Dave Murray listen up ! I will beat your winter forecast hands down: Warmer than normal winter...although there will be surges of arctic air during the winter portion of this El Nino, overall the winter Dec 1 thru March 1 will average above normal temps, below normal precip. The Fall will see colder than normal temperatures, higher than average snows. Additionally... I would not be surprized to see a higher than average count of tornados this winter, in the southeast USA...and perhaps an unusually late season hurricane in the deep Atlantic, which will of course not hit the USA. The western USA will be dry and warm this winter. Bad for skiing. And no, I am not Al Gore...trying to sell "global warming" |

Time will tell of course. As for me, I feel pretty good about anticipating a warmer than normal Winter ahead. El Nino has become a fairly accurate indicator of seasonal trends (although there have been notable exceptions). I would also caution that we will likely see some bouts of bitter cold and/or snow. That seems like a pretty safe bet.- Kent
