7 * Commuting to work using a bike and public transportation. * Refilling a bottle of drinking water. * Minimizing waste by using plastic dishes instead of disposables. * Asking for a paper bags at the grocery store, and reusing it as a recyclables container. * Using the laundry for full loads instead just a few clothes * Recycling plastic and paper, so that the size (and the amount) of the garbage bags can be dramatically reduced. Pretty soon I'll start doing compost and planting strawberries and tomatoes... we'll see how it goes :-) On any case, I've incorporated some those decisions into my life, and not only I feel that I've engaged in a healthier lifestyle, but when I'm ready to go to bed, i look back into my day, and I found this calm inner voice says that says: "well done". |

We live in a time where mode#4 is possible and the results are a chain of glacial & interglacial periods. Happen to have got my degree in 1987 before the narrowing down of the subject to suit the narrowed minds of the private fee paying boarding scholars,(they are a bit like arrows on a target board, very pointed, & somewhat bad for your health but no use at all for researching a wide subject). For climate modes refer to NASA & its atmospheric physics section referring to planetary atmospheres. The important bit for the weathermen & global temperatures per planet is the fact that condensation & precipitation tends to occur in the ascending part of the (belt) cells. Even more interesting is the fact that higher enegy atmosphered tend to produce monsoonal flows linking hot pools in the ascending part of the (belt) cell with the descending part. Monsoonal flow is rather important on earth too. Just for good measure when you have looked @ the pretty pictures in the atmospheric physics site, remember that the Earth as a result of being mixed continet & Ocean is able to operate in 4 climate modes. A pure continetal planet with thin atmosphere can only operate in modes #1 & #4. A purely oceanic planet with thin atmosphere can operate in modes #1,#2, & #3. The reson for mode#4 on Earth @ present is because the Central American land bridge has cut off equatorial connectivity allowing an oceanic hot pool to form. Once any disruption to a proper long lived mode#4 loop cell (such as the gulf stream) is removed, the mode (#4) runs until the heat is drained out of the hot pool. Mode#4 became possible once the land bridge cut off connectivity between the Pacific & Atlantic ~2.2Ma. The interval from then to now is called the "Pleistocene", aka. "Quaternary". This period is characterised by ice ages caused by the very efficient cooling caused by mode #4 which runs from the equatorial (El Nino) hot pool to the polar stratosphere, which is bloody cold. Tends to snow like hell over the laurentide region as a result forming a big ice cap. Once the hot pool runs out of heat, the mode #4 loop cell shuts down & mode #1 takes over which allows the equatorial ocean to heat up. This will trigger more mode#4 pulses & more ice until a timespan when clear pack ice develops in the N.Atlantic & the thermohaline circulation switches back on & disrupts any future mode#4 cell within a week of its initiation. The gulf stream last switched ON about 30,000Bp. The Earth has been warming back to ambient ever since that date as a simple result of interglacial oceanic modes #1 to #3. The time period after ice @ the Laurentide ice cap & the simultaneous loss of the (Interglacial start time) Fennoscandian ice cap out has been called the "Holocene" since at least the time of Huxley. Mode #4 becomes stable again once the Gulf stream switches OFF as a result of ice out in the Boreal ocean. All man made CO2 input does is increase the rate of surface warming & the rate of change. 4 Earth has not always had the same atmoshperic composition and in very distant earth history, carbon levels were extremely high. This benefited plants which in turn used the carbon and produced oxygen. The carbon sink - which we benefit from in the form of coal, oil, etc.- is one of the reasons we have an overall moderated climate today (in planetary terms). However, we have spent the last couple of hundred years releasing that trapped carbon by extensive or massive use of coal for hundreds of years and then the use of oil for the last 100 or so. This is a simplified explanation. There are volcanoes, fires, and other naturally occuring phenomena that add to the carbon in the atmosphere. I cannot address the ocean or all of the systems involved on topix. It took years of study, argument, questioning, and argument for me to arrive at my opinions on the matter...opnions which I will not state on topix - people need to do their own work if they are sincere. Lacking the human element, the carbon cycle does change condition naturally. However, for the first time in human history we are unlocking carbon sinks technologically and at the same time reducing the plant life that can help to "re-sink" it. One can only project where that might lead not taking into account any visible signs of possible effects. I suggest extensive biological, paleontolical, physical geographical, glacial, geological, volcanological, astronomical, chemical, anthropological, dendroconlogical, etc. etc., studies before anyone makes up their mind or states a strong opinion. Science is a discipline not rhetorical grandstanding. It takes work, not turning on the radio to listen to or TV to watch the talking heads. |
