I work outside all over, I've tried long johns and base layers costing a fortune, so agree with all the previous posts, tights are comfortable and so much warmer. If you manage to find the right pair you don't even know you are wearing them. I don't think of them of an item of female underwear, my other half wears mine anyway! But on a practice side a good thick pair of tights under your work clothes are the best. I'm straight the other alf don't mind as long as I am comfortable and warm. I ware pantyhose almost every day and at the end of a 14 to 16 hour day my legs do not ache they are 30-40 support tights I spend $100.00 and up per pair and to me they are worth every penny.
