It's high time Santa Cruz just embraced reality and allow fireworks on the beach. It already happens, so make it an event to draw in some revenue or something.

Your authoritarian regeime will have none of it. You don't get to vote on it either. When do we get rid of those criminal deputies, who confiscated firecrackers from the kids and them lit them in the sheriff's parking garage about three years ago? There is one set of rules for the goons with the Glock pistols and another set of rules for you.

They'll fine you $1,000 for the stuff you buy in Watsonville and the same amount of money, for illegal explosive devices. There is a big difference between sparklers and snakes as opposed to firecrackers and M-1000s. Sparklers and snakes violate a county ordinance. Firecrackers are banned by a state law. Posession of those M-1000s is a federal offense.

Isn't this kind of like trying to compare getting a marijuana ticket to being arrested for cocaine, speed or heroin? The punishment doesn't fit the crime...

if one gets a ticket for an M-1000, it will be heftier than a 'safe and sane'[in SC] ticket or a firecracker ticket..

why? they are metaphor for artillery, a weapon of mass destruction. fireworks trivialize war and should be outlawed everywhere.

Hell yeah, they should charge $5 a head to go on the beach to help cover the cost of clean up and emergency services. Only alcohol should be banned and be confiscated.

john doe writes "you don't get to vote on it either" I don't think it is the police who make the laws.... they are just doing their job as directted by our 'elected' officials. If you don't like the laws... vote for people that will change them to your liking.

i for one will be lighting off large firecrackers to celebrate our independence day, but at least ill be sober and responsible. if they were to set aside one beach where we (who use fireworks) could light them off legally, then we wouldn't have to do it in our neighborhoods, and i for one volunteer to clean up the next day. but as it is, the streets are where its going down, and there is no way to completely control it, there is no way to stop it. fireworks are not going away, everm and im not getting fined or arrested, so a big, huge FAIL to the sc sheriffs dept, the park rangers and chp, and police county wide. having all the law enforcement officers working today is just a waste of money.$1000 fines? you must be retarded, because only complete idiots would allow themselves to get busted tonight.

Returning veterans hate the explosions that are set off illegally on the 4th. Think about THAT tonight as you're celebrating your 'freedom'.

Nobody gets busted for snakes & sparklers. duh.

The 4th of July is just another excuse to act like a complete moron. Try reading the Declaration of Independence and then remember the native Americans who were getting scalped for $5 a head.

There's more to the founding of America than meets the eye.

first of all, im sure veterans are used to the sound of explosions. secondly, while i realize the us has acted foolish on many occasions, i refuse to give up on our country. while in the face of things like iraq, vietnam, etc this may seem like a dubious celebration, i believe in what america was ment to symbolize, even if that symbol has become tarnished during the past 200 years. and responsible use fireworks is nothing dangerous, even if they are powerful, illegal fireworks, hence the word responsible. but i am not everyone, and many people are drunk/ stupid, so i understand why the laws are in place. im just not going to obey them. happy independence day!
