maybe the killer was somone who doesn't like hyphenated last names.
Travis Hartline-Steffern. or someone who needs a job and will apply for travis's as soon as the heat dies down. |

It could it be that his own brother John Scott Hartline-Seffern was involved in this murder.
But we'll never hear it from John's lips. It seems he committed suicide after a police stand-off. |

A $500,000 life insurance policy, taken out one month before last week's fatal shooting of a Phoenix man along busy Scottsdale Road |

|
John Scott Hartline-Seffern, 46, another former prison inmate and the purported stepfather of the victim who killed himself late Saturday at his apartment in Mesa.
• Thomas Orville Bastian, 29, of Mesa, who was arrested early Saturday. • Jose Quintero-Figueroa, 30, who was arrested early Monday in Buckeye. Police, who said the three planned to collect on the life insurance policy, described this chain of events: Friday morning, John Scott Hartline-Seffern arranged to meet with Travis Hartline-Seffern in Scottsdale. When the step-father arrived at the meeting place, northwest of Thomas and Scottsdale roads, he found his step-son shot to death between Zorba's Adult Shop and a check-cashing store - Scottsdale's first homicide of the year. |

Scott was a generous man. He was brilliant and helped people from all walks of life.
He loved Travis and his family. He was devastated with Travis' murder. As far as the life insurance policy... every business partnership I know they carry life insurance on each other. Scott was a non-violent man. He wouldn't even go hunting. He loved life. He loved family. He had been to prison for white collar crime. It was not violent. This is where he assisted other inmates to get back into society. This is where he might have chosen to assist those with less pure motives. For those of us who knew Scott he will be missed. He was loved. I'm so sad that he was so sad to take his own life. He probably feared 'the appearance' of a conspiracy since one of the accused he had just taken in under his roof to give him a leg up. Scott was smart enough to realize the 'appearance' did not look good and he was already quite distraught over losing Travis that he decided to end it. |

Scott felt no remorse. He just didn't want to go back to prisson. All he cared about was himself. He was a con artist. I hope he was ashamed of himself. I also hope that when he did it, it hurt a lot. I'm happy he's dead and I hope he's burning in HELL!

hey sheri. how do you explain the fact that he had life insurance policys in my name? I have had nothing to do with that low life for years now! or how about the loans i am finding out he took out in my name, over 70k, and now the lenders are calling me! he tried to play taravis and i against eachother 'cause i told travis to cut ties with that con man! this is how he "helped ex cons get on thier feet"? he used people like pawns for financial gain! i held travis back from beating him silly at the lake, now i wish i would have unleashed him when he had the chance! scott is only loved by his family because they are blinded by love. i feel for them, his shame is now in thier blood line! how can u defend him? Sheri, his ex-wife i presume? look how he betrayed you and your children! Travis's name will be remembered in the halls of Vallhala. I LOVE U TRAVIS!

I hate to think things are the way as they appear. I met John in prison. I was his supervisor and he worked for me. I was a Correctional Officer. He was an exellent worker. Recently he contacted me, as I no longer work for the Prison. He even attended my church in April. I am very sad at all that has occurred. I am sad for the loss of these lives in a way that can't be expressed. No matter what the truth is, life was lost here and thats what really makes me sad. I didn't know Mr. Sefferen, but I know that he had a girlfriend and a baby. I hope they are comforted by God and also Johns family.

My son also met Scott in the correctionial facility in Az.And became very good friends. However when my son returned home, there were many conversations with Scott, Many of them asking my son to return back to Az. with promise's of great oppurtunities. I oftened asked Scott why he would or could offer so much. Also often telling my son, It all sounded to fishy to me. As I offer my conndolence's to Travas's family, I am one Mother who is happy her son is safe and home here in R.I.

My whole family hung out with Scott and Travis. We befriended them because of Joshua, my nephew. We knew them well and began to realize how manipulative and coniving Scott was. Sheri is right, he was a nonviolent man, he paid someone else to pull the trigger. Scott had Travis killed, when we found out Travis was shot we all immediately thought of Scott. Scott had a way of making people owe him in a very manipulative way. In a hearing that my sister and mom attended for Scott in court the judge even said, Mr. Hartline you are most manipulative man I have ever met." He helped people yes, all for his own benefit. He was caught, that is why he committed suicide. it wasn't that he was distraught over Travis. His business affairs were a mess and he needed the money. He was always moving money around. Scott was a con man. I am sad that he is dead, only in the fact that God made him, and he misused his life and took our friend Travis with him. We miss Travis so much. By the way, going to church doesn't make you good, just like sitting in the garage doesn't make you a car. Only Jesus makes you good, because He gave His life and took away the bad that God sees when He looks at you. Jesus is the answer, I wish Scott would have known Jesus.

Scott was a snake,a manipulator, and a con man.anything he did was for himself and no one else.he was a coward who took the easy way out.i knew travis and his family.they all seemed to think scott was bad news, except for travis.travis paid for his mistake, with his life.i've also met scott on numerous occasions and thought he was a fake.so i don't want to hear anymore sunshine stories about scott's generosity from someone who has never even met him.scott still got away with less than he deserved!

It is really sad for everyone especially Scott's Family. His mother, brother and sister are all wonderful people. It always made me wonder how "the apple could fall so far from the tree". They are all hard working, honest and just as I said wonderful. I am still so sad for them, because Scott chose the path that he chose and left them with this horrible legacy in their family. A wise old man once told me, "people are people"...God is good!!! He will and will always comfort us here on earth...Rest in Peace...Travis...Oh and Sheri...his ex-wife also spent time in prison for ripping people off!!!

i was in jail with travis and scott. abuse of drugs landed me in a place years ago where i met good and bad people. travis was pretty cool and i was shocked when i hear the news. it's still hard for meto believe that scott did this, yet i knewhim and always had a weird feeling bout him and know that he had the means to do it.
