There is a huge difference, even if you refuse to recognize it, between slurring an anonymous poster and slandering someone by name. HUGE difference.

Like a mother hen, she defends and protects them and bullies anyone who attempts to look at other questionable activity in Lincoln County that might involve her buddies.
I, for one, would like to know if Julie Carter has had a hand in all of this mischief. It would be a travesty, if so.

Btw, Since you have slandered Julie Carter and it was made clear in the paper by Mr Racine, that she and BH are not the same people. When can we expect to hear an apology from you?

Better reread that post. Just because I don't think Julie Carter has much writing skill and just because I wondered if she had a hand in the mischief on the forum does not constitute slander. Never did I say that the Odious German poster and Julie were one and the same.

If you are banning people for personal attacks, what about all of the horrible things having been said about Sean, Shane, Randy and all of the Carpenters? And calling an innocent woman names simply because she is portly? None of this was cool and all of this was done by one person. This is the problem with censorship. You censor all of it or you censor none of it. I'd like to know just how you were able to verify that BH is in Germany. This only lends credence to the possibility that she is puppeting for another individual with ties to your paper. I insist that Bavarian Hillbilly be immediately censored. If this cannot be done, I encourage all of those censored to file a class action lawsuit against Racine & the paper.

You are absolutely right, Dr. P. In fact, I also think the maligned and slandered victims of this forum may have a very good case. I would really like to know if any employee of the RN was among the libelous posters.

At long last some action was taken. On my computer, I see the posts no longer go in order, which definitely suggests that posts or posters have been banned.

I would like to agree with HJPICKLES about the need for some investigative journalism. Front page news is not a giant picture of some new city employee.

I think this had to do with the growing group of people who were coming together to picket the upcoming trial of our local silly cowboy. The editor is very tight with him. Hillbilly is very tight with him. Me thinks the triangle meets.

I find this shocking. Eliminating some people? You need to close down the forums or use your God given mind and enact a strict comment policy. On my blog, my policy is,"A comment that is abusive,is off-topic, uses excessive foul language, or includes an ad hominem attack. None such shall be tolerated and all such will be deleted.".

Editor Racine: I am having a hard time determining whose lies are greater, yours or the Bavarian Hillbilly's (Carter). Your smokescreen you put up claiming the Bavarian Hillbilly is in Germany is laughable. Everyone with good reasoning capabilities has figured out that she is using a proxy IP or someone else's computer remotely.

Carter has been linked to the Bavarian Hillbilly in numerous ways. The readers can decide this connection for themselves. And if you blacklist me for saying this it will only go to prove further that I am correct and the two of you are afraid of people knowing what you are up to.

Here is a summary of what has happened so far:
1)Your wife's voting case was kicked out of court. 2) Sean McGarry had his hearing and after months of articles and thousands of posts by you and your buddy Bavarian Hillbilly, he is still a policeman today. 3)Randy Spear is still the Chief of Police, despite your buddy Bavarian Hillbilly attacking him for months. 4) Graverobber Sederwall will be hauled in front of a judge next week. 5) A dozen or more private citizens in Capitan who have clean legal records, are still walking the streets despite your best efforts to allow Bavarian Hillbilly to slander them.

As for your journalism cred, a 1968 Broadcasting degree does not measure up to what's necessary to be competent in 21st century journalism. Back then there were 3 networks, no Internet, no cell phones, no cable, and journalism and broadcast laws were not what they are today. On Wednesday, the Ruidoso News, in cooperation with Topix of California, blackballed a "contributor" to the Readers Comments section of our Web site.

He went by the name of Shylock, aka Dusty and Milkweed. And his posts (159 in all) had turned personal, menacing and riddled with innuendo, character assassination and flat-out lies.

Shylock is not the first poster to go off-point and stray out of bounds from the topic at hand. And he will not be the last to be evicted from cyberspace. I'm considering bouncing Bavarian Hillbilly, who is verified to live in Germany. She's not menacing, but she keeps pulling the threads into absurd shapes.

We are not the only newspaper, I assure you, to have taken such drastic measures. We all are exploring new forms of communication, trying to balance your right to speak versus your right to be protected from verbal assault.

I regret not having taken action previously against posters engaging in personal attacks - against public officials, common citizens and employees of this newspaper. We have taken abuse for a long time, which is fine; journalists develop a thick hide. But some of those posts, according to legal minds, are bordering on libel, stalking and harassment.

And to the rest of you who have been dragged through the sewer, mainly elected officials, I apologize.

I don't have all day to play cybercop, but, going forward, we hope to keep a lid on the nonsense that passes for discourse.

When we were offered Topix
two years ago, I was excited; every newspaper worth its ink or seat in cyberspace provides a forum for readers to respond to its stories.
It's not the same as a blog, which is generated by a reporter or columnist instead of a news story, but the effect is the same. And in casual conversations, our Topix posts came to be known as the blogs.

As a proponent of freedom of expression, I welcomed "the blogs" as a medium allowing readers feedback on stories that mattered. And if the posts turned into rants, I expected that, as well. A lot of stories anger us; a lot of circumstances, rulings and behaviors annoy the hell out of us.

I also expected a fair amount of crusty, hardheaded jawboning; Lincoln County is still the Old West in many respects.

And, too, I was braced for some serious mudslinging, given some of the controversies of the past year: a heated sheriff's race, a mismanaged election in Capitan, a historic and divisive presidential campaign, etc.

Regretfully, a few posters began to hijack "the blogs." They devolved into juvenile food fights unworthy of our time or participation; I personally haven't responded in months. In the process, an opportunity to shape a better Lincoln County and a more informed citizenry was squandered.

Hopefully, with stricter monitoring, we can turn it around and appeal to our readers' higher instincts.

And if, in the process, someone wants to scream censorship, that's tough. If he wants to man up, use his real name and write a coherent letter to the editor that is free of libel, then he can have his free speech.

One of Shylock's posts, in a continuing attempt to discredit the Ruidoso News, implied that the editor doesn't have a journalism degree. I let that go be-cause, frankly, it's not relevant. Newspaper editors needn't be certified, such as doctors or lawyers, in order to pursue a career in said profession.

In point of fact, the 2002 Directory of Arizona State University Alumni, which I have in my office, contains this little item:

It's on page 1292. You can look it up, but, hey, don't let the truth blow your cover.

Of course you want to get rid of me because you were not able to bring any argumentation in that would have proved my words untrue. I know you don't like to read your own shame over and over. Yet, I didn't mention a name that had not been published before and what I wrote also had been said many times before by many other people. Anyway, what I wrote are my words and I stand tall for them but only for my words and not for what you pick, twist and interpret into them.

As to my location - every post is connected to an ISP no matter you can see it here or not - Topix can. My ISP comes from Germany because that's where I am: in Berlin, Germany. You guys should read what I write. I sure don't tell you everything but what I tell you is true. Seems this is one of the reasons you hate me so much. You couldn't scare me and you couldn't silence me with your lies and nasty words so now you try to manipulate the editor of RN to do the job for you.

However, banning BH will not stop me from posting and it will not stop me from standing up for what is right. You ask me why? I'll tell ya! I sure can do without your lies and nasty words but I am posting here to support those that are intimidated, stalked and frightened. The blogs give them hope. They see they are not alone and they can stand up, too.

This is not about Bavarian Hillbilly - this is about my friends and their friends and the friends of their friends. Laugh about it, make fun of it and feel superior all you want. You can intimidate and manipulate people - including the media - for quite a while but history shows it has never worked out. People do stand up against oppression and when they stand up together they will win. This is what vox populi vox dei can teach you if you are willing to learn...
