Hi everyone,

We were pretty excited last week to launch our new profiles. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response and new profiles are popping up everywhere.

Let us know what you think? What do you like? What else would you like to see on the profiles?

Thanks and have fun!

It is a good idea ..

However, I have landed in here from the Denmark Forum.

Please would you tell us and communicate with your users in a far better way to explain why you remove entire threads, and also some people, who have done nothing worse than to criticize the admin of Topix ...

It seems grossly unfair. Does not make sense, and stops people talking.

There are a group of people who never speak, but who are "flagging" posters constantly, and it seems you are reacting to this, rather than making rules and regulations that people can understand - they are not consistent.

Please have a look at teh Denmark Forum and realise what is happening - and please, please communicate with your users!!

Hi there,

Threads are removed for one of two reasons. The first would be if they violate our Terms of Service, which all posters agree to just by virtue of using our site. They can be reviewed here http://www.topix.net/topix/terms/ The other way threads are removed is if particular posters are removed for violating those same terms.

When a user is banned, which only happens after repeated violations of our Terms of Service (including posts that are caught in our filters that the general audience of Topix is not privy to) all their previous posts disappear with them.

No threads were removed from the Denmark forum solely for being critical of Topix. I think if you check out the forum, you will see many posts that are critical of Topix. However, using racial epithets or throwing out homosexual slurs in conjunction with those posts will get them deleted for violating Terms.

This is not a place that you can't be critical of the management. However, to do so, you must elevate the discourse to not include language that is by it's very nature, a bannable offense. I hope you can appreciate the difference.

If you feel these Terms are not evenly enforced, then by all means, make use of the "flag for review" link in the upper right corner of posts that you feel violate Topix Terms of Service. There is also a Feedback link on the bottom of each page that can be used to alert us to issues on the forums. With 360,000 forums, we do rely on the participation of our users to draw attention to areas that need moderation.

Howdy Top Mod,

I think the profiles are great! I have a question tho,
Where it says "Comments," some profiles show a number, such as 11 or 189 and so forth and some, like mine, have nothing there. What does "Comments" mean?

And how in the world did you get to our forum (Minnesota Vikings) to tell us to be polite?
Out of 360,000 forums, you walked into ours...?

The profile idea is great…”I don’t like the green color background and the blue name title”
Does not match in my opinion…light matching colors would make it easier for the eye…

It would be helpful...
If we could...
Edit our posts...
Add pictures...and expressions...e.g. smiley faces...etc…within our posts..
And if we had more options regarding font, font size, and style
It will make it more convenient to communicate on these forums..

Thank you for your efforts….

Does your proprietary NewsRank technology give extra attention to sources that share the same ownership as you?
It seems that that newspapers formerly owned by Knight Ridder which also used to own topix.net seem to get extra attention in lieu of many other internet-able web news sources. In the Bay Area, the most attention goes to the Mercury News and The Daily News Group.
Full disclosure?

you seem to be trying to be doing both digg and slashdot all at once, except your stories have no "human" intrigue to them. they are not interesting news, and that's where it fails. there are tons of tv channels with thousands of news stories, but no one is clamoring to watch all the news at once. an internet user's time is valuable, and shouldnt be wasted on mediocre news. if yahoo has boring stories, you still put them on here. everything is uninterestingly filed and sorted like an infinite stamp collection. that's why slashdot's comment threads are more engaging and complex; because the editors have already weeded out the useless stories. you haven't. just LOOKING at your page is an eyesore. also, there is no way to moderate users, or their trolling habits. instead, you seem to just delete threads at will. people already have enough sites similar to this that work far better for their needs, that grant their users with more versatility - your membership seems to be increasing, but it will soon plateau as you run out of people with the ADD required to navigate a site like this.

I totally agree with MJI ...

You have deleted posts where someone wrote "shites" ... it is a simple spelling error, the people who wrote it meant shi'ites ... and immediately Topix in its "infinite wisdom" chose to relate it to a profanity ..

I could go on mentioning things like this .. you are not allowing your users freedom of expression .. you take out what you believed to be homosexual slurs from one particular user ... totally ignoring the fact he was using the slurs sarcastically to get back at people who quite openly stated that "homosexuals should be exterminated" ...

Quite an OUTRAGEOUS statement!!! An unbelievably primitive statement coming from a primitive person.

And the banned person responded to that sarcastically by referring to gay people in his posts, but mentioned on several occasions that he had absolutely NO problem with homosexuals and would not slur against them at any point, other than in the manner he did on the forum to return the "favour" to the people who had quite openly used terrible language .. which was never commented upon by Topix ... their posts were never removed and they certainly were never banned from Topix ...

Topix seem to single out people ... and then continue to "hound" them continuously ...

It is not a good manner in which to act to gain respect from the users ...

I can see your point in part of your explanation --- if you were consistent. But because you are not consistent, and because you do not communicate with your users, it becomes "hit and miss" actions ... Mostly "miss" ... and "hitting" upon the wrong people, who have reacted.

Dear TOPIX

My sincere apologies for what Danetoo has said...
She by no means...represents posters on the Denmark forum...

We think you are very fair...and doing a wonderful job...

Banning people like TA...was a wonderful thing...for maintaining decency in the forums...

I agree with you TOPIX...
One can always make his/her point...without lowering themselves to the level of using bad language...
Using bad language is an insult in itself to humanity... and should not be tolerated...

The general public taste, the promotion of mutual understanding, and intelligent debating...
Requires you to do what you do...

And we respect you for that....

TOPIX you are the man...

Sharp ... I really have no wish to take our argument and discussions on to this thread ...

You are one of the perpetrators of bad language and terrible things you have said to provoke replies like the one TA made ..

You think of yourself as being an "intelligent debater"??... lol ... Wishing for the death of an entire nation is "intelligent"??

Mutual understanding .. you say it is a tragedy that people are literate and that music was allowed ... and that women are not all dressed in hijab and niqab ... is that "understanding" ...

I doubt very much Topix will take many of your comments into account, at least I hope they are more intelligent than that ..

You see TOPIX....

This is exactly why you should not pay much attention to the poster called Danetoo... her posts speaks loudly for itself…
I am glad she saved me the time and the effort...of having to explain to you how she really is...
You could clearly see how she likes to get attention by attacking others…
She can’t prove a point without picking on other people…and making things up…
Your rules…does not suite her…because simply…it limits her joy of demeaning others…to satisfy her many complexes…
Just like what she is suggesting to you…and the tone and attitude she is using…

Again I apologies...on her behalf...
And I hope you will not generalize her behavior...on all posters in the Denmark forum....

I salute and support you for your efforts to keep these forums a GOOD place for intelligent people to debate and discuss matters…in a more “human” way…

Thank you

I have to agree about the color choice. There are so many pretty colors to chose from and i don't care much either for the yellow/green choice. Maybe sometime in the future when you make changes again, they can switch it to something more cheery.
just my opinion. But I do love topix and have always been glad I found it for many reasons.

Oh and ONE more thing. If I'm correct, I believe you have to have an e mail addy to register in Topix. Recently I cancelled my AOL subscription and have been left without an e mail address since. I now use Verizon dsl but have not seen anything about mailbox options. Does anyone know of a "free" way to send and receive e mails thru any other carrier? thanx again and HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
