Full story: El Paso Times

A local Catholic church appears to have violated IRS rules -- and Catholic doctrine -- by endorsing a presidential candidate in a church bulletin.

seems kind of touchy. The way they worded it makes it kind of on the edge. They didn't actually endorse any candidate. What they did was say to replace the current president. So they didn't say to vote for anyone.
Reminds me of Billy Bubba with the whole, "It depends on what the meaning of is, is".

I agree with the sentiment of what they said but think it is not what they should be doing. Church should stick to religon and stay out of politics.

The Catholic Church is going to have to really bend down on their knees and beg the IRS for lenient action. The priest at St. Raphael's is elderly (82)and was probably convinced by the writer of the newsletter to allow the proclamation not knowing it was illegal. Maybe the IRS should take away their status for one year as penalty for their stupidity. This is why there is a separation of Church and state so the church does not have an influence on the state.

Can't really say if it is illegal or not as they did not actually endorse anyone. Then again if the bulletin was put out by a lay person that could enter into it as well.

I don't agree with what they did but not sure if it will measure up to actual illegal status. I mean after what we saw in 2008 from the democrats this is very minor.

If the case is against the church then the IRS should also go after Rev. Tom Brown for using his churches website in the recall which I do believe is still pending.

I believe the Churches have the right to protest their inclusion into the health care mandate for offering women their birth control but I also believe the government should not allow men the right to get their VIAGRA free in any prescription plan. They need to pay for it as women had to pay for their birth control.

Not sure about Brown just know that we should have recalled the whole group of crooks in city hall long time ago.

As to the other thing with birth control and viagra I think that should be up to the individual insurance plan.
I think the Government needs to stay the hell out of it.

I am not totally against the health insurance coverage for women's health issues but covering them by mandate is wrong. Men and women should pay for their contraceptive medication unless it can be demonstrated the hormone replacement is necessary to the good health of the woman. Then any plan should have them pay the deductible.

So you're not only racist but sexist too? Women deserve access to unfettered abortion, birth control pills and all the other things they need, unless you are some sort of cave man. Romney/Ryan want to take them all away for good.

They endorsed the hell out of this race because they said Obama has to go, just like Newsweek did. I hope they cut him a break because he is old and a damn good Catholic.

I see you're quoting the Hatch Act but don't forget about the Mann Act either - that could come into play.

No you see because they nly said that obama must go does not constitute endorsement of Romney.
So it is still a close call. They never named a candidate to vote for only that they shouldn't vote for obama. By the way the bulletin was written they could vote for Paul, Romney, Alfred E Neuman, Santa Clause, or anyone else. We all understand what they meant but by the law it may not be an endorsement.
I am no lawyer so I can't say for sure but it is a close call either way.
