There is no monetization of content strategy worth a damn. I may be absurdly wrong, but I can't help but think we end users feel we are already paying for content - but that our payment never arrives to the content creators - thanks to the superhighway robbery of the Internet Service Providers. Elaborated a bit on this here: http://interimtom.blogspot.com/2009/07/fuck-p...

Did anyone ask him if that photo he used (the kid and the sumo wrestler) was his? Licensed? Used with permission? Seems kind of silly, writing about the old and new media, talking about who makes money and who ddoesn't, if that image was "stolen".

I agree with Chris when he talks about the only way to make a buck is to get down in the dirt and fight for it.
I also agree that Howard's goal may be ok, but all of the ideas and tactics are wrong. To me, it's all about community and individualization now. World news means MY WORLD, not what you think the world is - it's all about me and what I want. If I want news from Iraq... give me that, if I don't want that news, please stop forcing it on me. Newspapers are their online brands are competing and losing because they offer a marginal product to an indifferent audience. |

What's funny is that when AP articles do make the big social sites, the users tend to link to google or yahoo AP versions because they are much more clean and users are less overwealmed with ads compared to your average newspaper site.

Wow - much ego there? Howard Weaver may be tilting at windmills but at least he's doing it for all the right reasons. No need to put on such an attitude to present a contrary point.
Of course, Howard does have a few good points - that companies with huge resources stand a better chance of dominating a marketplace once they decide to move there (Think Microsoft and web browsers) and even though he didn't articulate it well, Howard recognizes that the potential is in the hands of content creators (journalists and the publishers that hold their leash) rather than aggregators or search companies. |

All of the Web writers who dump on "traditional" journalists make great points, and they're right to criticize guys who don't get that the game has changed.
But they're all also ignoring that the "traditional" outlets are still overwhelmingly the only ones producing actual, valuable content. What is Topix but a giant aggregator? Name me a successful new media news site that "gets it" - Tech Crunch, Talking Points Memo - and I'll give you five, ten or twenty "traditional" outlets that are producing the original value that the vast majority of Web sites (like Topix) leech. Tell me what would happen to Topix if the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post or USA Today (the source of 50% of Topix's top stories) stopped producing their news? |
