Even though I'm not Catholic, I've always said the sex scandals and the subsequent coverups are not the fault of the church, but of the guilty parties. But what the heck is going on? How did things get in such a state? I remember hearing a sex story about a priest in our area when I was a kid, but I didn't believe a word of it. Now I wonder.... The molestations and rapes are bad enough, but higher up clergy helping to hide it? These were men who entered the PRIESTHOOD for pete's sake. Where were their consciences? Why didn't they report it as soon as they found out about it? They let it go until it spiraled so out of control it's of epidemic proportions. This did not have to go on the way it did. The average next door neighbor would have reported any man or woman harming a child as soon as they discovered it. But the people who covered up the church scandals were priests! I would find it impossible to ever again believe that the RCC cares one whit about children, or perhaps even anyone else but themselves. Jesus the Head of this church? NEVER! People on this forum are forever saying horribly vicious things about gays - to those of you who do, do you think Jesus would approve of the coverups? When He said the Holy Spirit would be protecting and watching His church, how can you believe even for a second that He meant THIS one? Unless you're low enough to believe the Spirit WAS watching but didn't care enough to take some kind of action.

The vatican is investigating the nuns in america. Nuns never molested anyone, but there is no investigation of those in the Vatican who lied, deceived and covered up the worst of sins for their brother clergy around the world. Legion of Christ is just another one of the groups that are filled with sexual predators.

When He said the Holy Spirit would be protecting and watching His church, how can you believe even for a second that He meant THIS one? Unless you're low enough to believe the Spirit WAS watching but didn't care enough to take some kind of action. Fr. Donald Cozzens has written about the sexual abuse of children by priests. His books are well balanced and researched. He speaks of the coverups and the culture within the Church to protect herself at all costs. Unfortunatetly the costs have been the ruining of so many lives. This culture has not been completely been broken. The status quo in too many ways is still strong. Still there are those who cry out never again and have armed themselves with the tools to prevent as much as humanly possible it from happening again. The Holy Spirit does not make the Church a robot. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be with the Church "until the end of the ages." He did not state that the members of the Church would be perfect in all things "until the end of the ages." Those within the Church are made up of saints and sinners. This includes the clergy. Do not kid yourself that neighbors will always come forward when it is known that a child has been abused. Children have abused by other family members and either the child has not been believed or people put their heads in the sand because it's just to horrible to confront. The abuse scandal is not something Jesus approves of. I am not "low" enough to believe the Holy Spirit was "watching" and didn't care. This is the kind of statement that could be made about any action committed by sinners in which victums are hurt. Why didn't God step in and stop whatever the it is before it happened? The choice to believe in a good and loving God and the Church is a difficult one. I choose to believe as a sinner who understands that I and the members of the Church to include the clergy are still on a journey and are not yet perfect.

You know this to be true. I know this to be true. There are those on these threads though who despirately need to use the scandal to tear the Church down as if it were a problem only found in Catholic priests.

I haven't been online for a while if anyone's noticed, LOL. Actually nothing to laugh about - hospitalized AGAIN and although I've been home awhile, I've been too weak to do anything. Getting old, while having some perks, has its downfalls, too. Again, you post fairly and open-mindedly, not at all brainwashed. I know you're a very good Catholic but when something is wrong you respectfully and honestly admit it without "dissing" your church and I give you tremendous credit for that. You remain sensible and that's one of the various reasons your posts are important to me and I feel I can learn from you. You can maintain objectivity and a brainwashed person could not do that. Yet your love for your church is delightfully evident and even when you disagree with something, your respect for your church shines through. You're a lot like my best friend who is a devout Catholic but acknowledges, as you do, that the church is made up of saints and sinners. You do your church proud! When I find I've been wrong about something, I'm not afraid to admit it. You are correct in that many children in private homes or otherwise, are abused yet nobody takes action. While I think the church is still handling this at least improperly, I recognize as I've said all along, it is not the RCC's fault, but the fault of the guilty parties only. Once more, I feel I've learned from you and that makes me happy. I look forward to your future posts; you're a smart person, and helpful.

I did notice you hadn't posted for awhile and I am glad to see you back. I am sorry you were in the hospital. I will keep you in prayer that your health continues to improve. I was thinking of when the big scandal in the press was how doctors were protecting other doctors in malpractice situations. It was known that a certain doctor was incompetant and yet no one spoke up about it. Then at the death of a patient the doo doo would hit the fan. Think about police stations where there are crooked cops. Do you remember the movie "Serpico"? It was based on a true story. This is not to excuse the institution of the Church in the least but to bring out the reality that institutions even with the highest of callings seem to fall into this unhealthy sense of self protection. I wish I knew the answer to this.
