El Paso El Paso The way things go around here. You get 2 Westside old half cocked artsy fartsys very lame idea art like those grotesque costly pieces of sh!t statues in juarez and Chihuahua or the fiber glass alligators down town. Ardovino and Frausto lookin to make some easy BIG tax payer money being on some sort of art committee. We all know the smoke stack will just end up being a mexican appeasing thing like a big mexican flag flag pole costing hundreds of thousands of dollar to do, with Ardovino and Frausto making big money on the deal and their little followers following them blindly. In the end as with anything else that comes to be in North Juarez Oh excuse me West El Paso, tax payer money will be used to make a beautiful work of art (gag) that will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars over time that will in the sort term fall in disrepair as Ardovino and Frausto count the easy money from somewhere outside El Paso and then FINALLY tax payer money will be used again to tear down this dilapidated rip off eyesore. Really El Paso the answer is easy, tear it down, tear it down NOW. But no let's throw tax payer money at it first, throw money at it, throw money at it. TEAR IT DOWN AND PAVE OVER IT!!!

Mr. Ardovino, do you realize how much poison that smokestack emitted and in turn ruined so many families lives that ended up with sick and deformed children? I also imagine that you don't care, being you came up in an elitist family that only looked down the hill at the poor folk's in Smeltertown. Why don't you spend your money on something useful like a charity?

LOL, use the smokestack to to enhance tourism? Really, where in the heck did you get the idea that it could a tourist attraction? No one outside of the county ever heard of or care to travel any distance to see it. People travel to see the Empire State building, the St Louis Arch, the Seattle Point, the Eiffel Tower, But the El Paso smokestack, LOL! The second delusion is where the money would deride from, to maintain it year after year. Do you really believe the contributions would be continious? Like it has been stated, use your money and any contributions to help some charity.

I don't care if ASARCO and it's hundreds of jobs are gone even though it was there even before the westside exsisted. I don't care if Speaking Rock and the supporting businesses are shut down. I don't care if all manufacturing is shipped over seas. Just as long as my family still has their City jobs and I have my public housing. Democrats are for the poor, let the pinchi gringos pay for it. And if I don't get a raise in my welfare benefits it's all Bushs and the teabaggers fault.

El Paso by far has the most worthless un creative people on the face of the planet, we have fat bald Mexicans with tattoo necks, We have worthless Negros that want to Ghettotise Northeast El Paso with their rampant criminal gangs. We have Anglos that know nothing about about history and preservation, then we have the people from the other side of the border than dont contribute squat other than asking for handouts and trashing our city. I also dont think that Fort Bliss brings El Paso much quality either other than to create a giant Bulls Eyes if a hostile nation ever wants to Nuke the U.S. this is the great place to drop the bomb. You put all these idiot sub humans togethere and El Paso ends up with one huge melting pot of Cesspool sewage waste. People that have no vission their only desire is to freeload cause trouble and take up valuable space and time, taggers, boom car stereos, high school dropouts and teenage pregnancy is the only so called art and resources in this city. I know for a fact the preserving the Asarco Smoke Stacks, retrofiting both of them and developing the whole Smelter area into an El Paso Park is just to intelligent and smart creative thinking for those that will dissagree with me. Alot of cities out there preserve their history and turn industrial blight into tourist attractions, except for here in El Paso. The Smelter area is to close to Anapra and the Third World Image to want to bring High End Retail and Condominiums, I think that is what they want to do is developed one Huge White Elephant to replace the Smoke Stacks. Save the Smoke Stacks preserve history and dont repeat the same past mistakes that this city is good for. Dont forget how you screwed up the Aguatic Park in Ascarate Park,Western Playland and other good venues you ran off or scared away because there are just to many worthless Naysayers in this city, they are scum of my scrotum.

Decent idea, Mr D, however the maintenance costs would kill any money from tourism,
While the stack might be important to El Pasoans, the outside world is not interested. Hate to disappoint you, but it's the truth. Just like the star, only important to the residents, but outside, no interest or even know of it.
The Mission Trail should be the tourist attraction.

The outside world does not live in El Paso, but tens of thousands of people drive right by the smoke stack everyday. The Star is also a good thing it was not put there to impress the outside world it was originally a Christmas Icon. The Mission Trail is a tourist attraction but the city and county dont promote it so who is going to know it' there?

True, but they are trying to say it would be a tourist attraction. That's very misleading.
I am just stating, it would be cost prohibitive to market the stack as a tourist attraction and the contributions wont be enough.
And youre right about the Mission Trail. Until I moved here never heard of the stack or the Trail. El Paso has some really neat things, but chooses to focus on insignificant things.
They need an exllent marketing firm. Believe it or not, many Americans dont know where El Paso is located or think it is in Mexico. You have to give tourists to come and so far the city has failed.

Believe it or not, many Americans dont know where El Paso is located or think it is in Mexico. You have to give tourists to come and so far the city has failed. First of all thanks for the intelligent post, and actually you are right they did mention it becoming a tourist attraction and I dont see why it couldn't or shouldn't. The very same money they are going to spend to implode the smoke stack at a cost of 8 million dollars would better be spent on preserving it. But this is El Paso where they knock down historical buildings discontinue electric street car service and remove the steel tracks, they abandon their central business core and let it deteriate for over twenty years then they want to bring it back to life. They run the amusement park out of town, they scale back on a state of the art aquatic swimming pool, they build a baseball stadium out where nobody goes then they loose the double AA baseball team by selling it to out of town owners, They just lost the Vaquero Statue at the Art Museum to help benefit another cities art museum, everything this city does is backwards. Theres no hometown pride here the people here dont support the sports venues at UTEP, they allow the destruction of the Franklin Mountains with developement in process for under the table bribes, they have that huge crater cement quarry over by William Beaumont Hospital destroying the mountain piece by piece. The only thing this city prides itself is that it is a killing zone for abandon and stray animals, it is the birth place of the Barrio Azteca gang, Night Stalker Richard Ramirez we are getting Toll Roads El Paso is right next to one of the worlds biggest homicide Capitols, The Rio Grande no longer flows between Juarez and El Paso it's a concrete ditch now and when they explode the Smoke Stack next year everyone here is going to be pretty proud because that will probably be the most exciting thing that happen here between the year 2000 to the year 3000. Yes you are right the city has failed and continues to fail misserably I see why so many places poke fun of El Paso, the mentality here is pretty sad, it's no wonders alot of the younger people with brains leave the city for better places. I left for 22 years and made the mistake to come back I see the big difference from then to now it's gotten alot worst and theres still nothing here.

Make atleast the big smokestack a shrine to all the hard working Mexican poeople that worked at the smelter. You all know how they protect them people around here. Then if they want to blow it up all hell would break loose. That should save atleast one of them.

The stacks represent to the illegals coming from Mexico that you are almost to the U.S. border and almost close to free welfare programs.

I agree. Too many slackers today who want to live on mom and dad or the government. My taxes alone would pay for all of the Occupy nut cases at the plaza. I'm tired of them sucking me dry.
