I would like to think that a lot of thought went into this issue B4 terminating these 2 workers but on the surfice it would seem that a supesion of some length would be more appropriate than termination.
Their actions may have been counter library policy but it was not for personal gain & was only with good intentions. Firing seems extreme |
Firing them was 'politically correct', that was the only reason they were fired, instead of reprimanded, which would have been logical!

I for one think that is ridiculous that these two people were fired for trying to protect our youth. What's next? Is a 16 year old going to be able to rent porn. As a parent, I condone their actions and wish that there were more people with their morals. But what am I thinking? In today's society, everything is acceptable. I walked into my apartment building the other day and was taken back by two young teens on the stairwell having their way with one another.

do you even know what the book is or is about
DO YOU ??? If you want to go on the attack, put some teeth in your question. Because in fact it was a magazine, not a book. NO ONE has argued that this magazine is inappropriate for 10,11,12, or 13 yr olds. They have argued Only that is wasn't the place or responsability of these 2 library empoyees to discriminate who signed it out. |
It doesn't matter what the book or magazine or cd or dvd was. Fact of the matter is, it was in the graphic novel series and she was 11. They didn't feel comfortable checking it out to her. There are lots of movies rated "r" that some parents would not consider to be to explicit for their children, but the movies can't be bought by minors. It is the principle of the fact. They should not have lost their job for trying to sheild our youth. I have worked as a cashier and not sold cigarettes to pregnant women. It is against my believes, and I was told I had the right to refuse to serve them. Why are the library staff any different? |

The library has policies and procedures, along with the American Library Association policies and code of ethics. If the employees don't like what is on the shelves, they DO NOT have the right to deny patrons access to materials. If they are uncomfortable, they should find somewhere else to work. In a church library, for example. When you work for someone else, you do not have the right to choose what duties you and will not perform. If you got by with it, I guess you were just lucky. |

1 I understand that their are policies and procedures, I am not trying to argue that fact. I am saying that it is an outrage to me that these two lost their jobs for having morals and ethics. Does it honestly not bother anyone else? Do I really stand alone in this???? If so, then I am not only outraged, but now concerned... |

still nobody even knows what the literature is about it is a comic book based in the yr 1958 publishing began in the yr of 1999
what do morals have to do with anything if my "morals" are to smoke and i force them on you or anybody would you like that, probaly not so why is it okay for these ladies to force thier morals on an entire community why dont people keep to themselves and quit trying to raise other's children http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_League_of_Ex... |
NOT to argue with your points, especially your statement that no one really knows what they are talking about concerning this magazine or even about 'morals' in your context. There is no doubt that these librarians exceeded their responsabilities. BUT many morals, limitations or age of responsibilties are dictated by law such as needing to be 18 to buy tobacco, 17 to see an 'R' rated movie, 21 to drink legally, minimum ages to get married, enter 'adult stores', sign contracts or drive. There are good reasons for these limits. |
yes there are good reasons for these legal age limits that you mention but if this child is old enough to put this book on hold then this child is old enough to read the book and i say child bc she is a child and has parents that should enforce rules that they see fit not complete strangers that believe that what the church says goes and that is for everybody dont get me wrong i believe in god but sometimes these type of people can really get abnoxious but at least this child is at the library trying to read books |
one other thing can anyone pinpoint the definition of GRAPHIC NOVEL that pertains to this book other than the first definition that pops in to your head which more than likely the definition is " blood, guts, gore, sex, and anything that falls along those lines" but that may or may not be the case bc the graphic novel description means so many things
I have said nothing about the church. I agree that they can sometimes take things overboard. Have you ever heard the phrase, "It takes a village to raise a child."? Parents cannot see everything their child does. I like the idea that someone out there could give a care about my child. I would not want my child to be able to walk into the library and just check out any book they wanted, or to be able to rent any movie or CD. What if it had been a Kama Sutra book? Would we still be having this conversation? |

They Fired Those People For Not Allowing Those Kids To Check Out Dirty Comic Books, Check This Out "IF THEY ALLOWED THEM TOO"..I Thinnk The Parents Would Have Sued The Daylights Out Of That Library. It Sounds Like A No Win Situation And SAD That Some Lost There Job FOr Doing The Right Thing.
Im Sure There Parents Would NOT Go Out And BUY There KIDS Such Material....My Thoughts |
Pls let me start by saying that I am not arguing for arguments sake. Just having a 2 way conversation. Pls let me add that I am a very secular person. In fact my 'hackles' come up when someone says something like 'Gods word', or 'read the bible' because I can think of at least 5 different bibles; Eastern Orthodox, Gideon, Greek Orthodox, King James,& Roman Catholic,(alphabetical order) enough said there. BUT, as far as a CHILD being able to check a book out...all that takes (depending on the library) is marking a box, filling in a line, swiping a card or whatever. That does NOT make it right, just possible. How many 'kids' TP someones house, steal a Playboy from a friends house, gets a speeding ticket, shoplifts or whatever without the parent knowing? Just because they can do it, doesn't make it OK. One of the BIG problems with todays kids IS the parents that say, "that's my kid & YOU have NO business telling them anything"? And the parent blindly defends their kid (NOT all parents) & then WE wonder why kids key our car, TP our trees, do drugs, have sex, stay out all night, make babies, wear their pants around their crotches instead of their waist, watch video's with extremely suggestive sex & think that having sex is the same as love since they have NOT learned Self Respect. It's because of hands off parents or other adults that DO NOT teach respect & responsabilty to these kids. Well, I am ready for the 'hands-off' parents to attack me now. BUT they are part of the problem. CHILDREN do NOT have the same rights as Adults. That is why Adults are responsible for children/minors. Thay are not expected to be rational & or mature because they are NOT mature. Lay it on me parents! |
i didnt say you brought up the church the ladies that were fired did and i have heard "it takes a village to raise a child" but in these times. do you know me? would you want me to "raise your child"i would expect an answer like "hell no" due to the fact that who in thier right mind would want a stranger to intervene in thier life as well with my children there is no way anybody will step in, in a day to day basis but if it was in a life threating situation i see where that would be okay but a comic book for a child that enjoys reading and to your child just being able to walk in and rent or buy illicit items for thier age first things first it falls back on your shoulders bc who is the parent "the village" or you and secondly rules have been put in place for the karma sutra type items and no we wouldnt be having this conversation bc the only way a child would get those items would be illegaly |

I Would HIGHLY Recommend These Kinda Libarians In Any Library. Teaching STARTS at HOME, Do NOT Put a Person(s) In a Position To Have To Be The One To Say NO To Your Child, When A Decent Parent Would Have Said NO To Checking Out This Kinda Material.
And As FOr Reading, THERE IS A CHILDS SECTION in EVERY Library! This Is SIMPLY NOTHING But Unsupervised Kids Inside There OWn Home, Thats Where It Starts Before It GOes TO THe STREETS! |
