The Globe Reporters and Father Rol

Reading in PMPT:

"After Jeff (Shapiro) left Hoverstock's office, I met with Father rol privately. I told him I worked for the Globe and that I believed the Ramseys were involved in the death of their child. Then I asked, "Have they asked you for confession?"
FOR A MOMENT HE DIDN'T ANSWER. Then he said, "I have no respect for what you do for a living. You lie about everything."
"'No we don't, Father. We don't lie,"' I replied.
I could see this strong man biting his lower lip. for a momenht I thought he might throw me out of his office.
"'As a forgiver of sins, the church is a house for all sinners, "' I said. "'So I should be one of the first welcomed into your congregation."' He remained silent and I continued. "'You should not turn your nose up at any of god's children."' He still did not respond.
"'Don't you feel that if the Ramseys are responsible you have to do somthing about it?"' I asked.
Finally he replied, "'THIS IS A SANCTUARY. I HAVE TO TREAT EVERYONE IN MY CHURCH IN AN APPROPRIATE WAY. THEY CAME HERE TO SEEK GOD AND THAT IS WHAT THEY WILL FIND."'
I COULD SEE HE WAS OFFENDED THAT I WAS ASKING HIM ABOUT MATTERS HE CONSIDERED PRIVILEGED.
"'I am here to find the truth," I told him. "'If there are two murderers loose in your congregation, I would have no qualms about stepping over the boundaries of the church protocol to put them where they belong."' Then I said I hoped he would steer the Ramseys in the right direction. HOVERSTOCK STOOD THERE QUIETLY FOR A SECOND OR TWO. I SEEMED TO HAVE CAUGHT HIS INTEREST.
"'The greatest sin of all is taking another's life," I continued. "'I would not want to have your job. Mine is much easier. I can catch the killers and turn them over without any struggles of conscience. I understand that you can't. You have to save their souls."'
"'THAT IS MY JOB," Hoverstock said.
"'Have you saved their souls?"' I asked him.
"'HE DIDN'T ANSWER.
Then he asked me to leave, but in a nice way. "'I do love you,"' he said. "Come here, my brother,"' and we hugged."

PMPT continued:

"Rol came up to John and put his hand on his shoulder as if to say, "'You're going to make it through this. You're going to survive. You didn't do this."'
Then he came to me (Shapiro), looked into my eyes, and said, "'MAY YOU ACCOMPLISH EVERYTHING THE LORD HAS SENT YOU HERE TO ACCOMPLISH."'
After the service, I (Shapiro) talked to Hoverstock.
"'I work for the globe,"' I told him.
"'I've heard that."
"'When I'm undercover as an investigative reporter, I don't tell anyone. I needed time to think out what I said to you last Sunday. I respect you, Father; you deserve to know the truth."'
"'I respect you for telling me,"' Hoverstock said, "'but you lied to all of us."
"'I didn't lie,"' I told him. "'I'm undercover."'
"'What's the difference?"'
"'There's a big difference,"' I explained. "'If I were an FBI agent, you'd understand. But reporters have a role in a democratic society to find out the truth. That's what I'm here to do."'
"'That may have some merit. But what it comes down to is that I feel deceived."
"'Then I showed Hoverstock a picture of JonBenet IN MAKEUP. SHE LOOKED SAD."'
"'THAT'S NOT THE LITTLE GIRL I KNEW,"' he said.
"'But this is what this case is about. I'm here to avenge that little girl."'
"'So you're telling me that you're some holy avenger? No. You're a predator. You're all predators."
"'I'm here to make a difference. Someday you'll understand I'm a good person."'
"'You are a good person,"' Hoverstock said. "'BUT I DON'T LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU'RE ON JOHN'S CASE ALL THE TIME."'(note: Hoverstock doesn't mention Patsy)
"'I'M NOT. I'M ON PATSY'S CASE. WE'RE NOT IN HEAVEN,"' I continued. "'We're still on earth, and God has given us our own laws to follow here."'
As I left his office I recited from the Bible a verse that Chris Darden quoted to the Simpson jury: "For the Lord doth hate these things: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood."
HOVERSTOCK LOOKED HARD AT ME.
Then I added, "LET JUSTICE BE DONE THOUGH THY HEAVEN FALL."

Now. IDI, How can you read the words above and not, at least, have a little suspicion that Hoverstock thought Patsy might be involved?

Why was Hoverstock upset about John being hounded but not Patsy?

These two exchanges between Ken Harrell and Father Rol and between Shapiro and Father Rol are very important. Both Shapiro and Harrell make it clear that they believe a Ramsey (Patsy especially) is involved in JonBenet's death. Rol does not correct them and this is important because a man of the cloth WOULD PROBABLY NOT LIE but rather just not comment. This is exactly what Hoverstock does.

And think about Shapiro showing JonBenet's MADE UP TO LOOK LIKE AN ADULT picture to Rol? Rol says:
"That's not the little girl I knew." Interesting comment. And right after that, Shapiro makes it clear that this is what his presence in Boulder is all about...insinuating that there's a connection between this artificial JonBenet and a little girl...an artificial JonBenet that was being manipulated by her mother...Rol didn't like it because he wouldn't even try to defend that pic.

Most of us, who have been around many years on this earth, know a little about human nature and can draw certain conclusions from human behavior.

When I read this exchange between Hoverstock and the Globe reporters, it tells me a heckuva lot. IMO, it screams that Hoverstock believed, at the least, Patsy was involved in this horrible happening.

Now. IDI. There's one of several possibilities.

1. Harrell and Shapiro were being dishonest about their conversations. If this be the case, why didn't Father Rol set the record straight.

2. Harrell and Shapiro were relating the discussions exactly as they took place. If this be the case, Father Rol, at the least, believed Patsy could be involved.

So, you're implying that Jeffy reported this conversation inaccurately? If so, didn't Father Rol have an obligation to publicly correct this report?

Learin the author of the book that you got your stories from . Said he had been married for 4 yrs. He got married 20 days after Jonbenet was murdered, on Robert Resslers birth day... Jan . 15th.. He also said he rearranged words and pharases . and even segments,And took from speach to print and made it sound bites ... As if we couldn't grasp the story for our selves, so my answer is this, jeff worked for the Globe not the clergy.. He worked for a story and nothing else, his opionions like all media opion is what it is just an opion, where is his movie, and the cop Rick French movies of the Rev. And John & patsys beahavior... There's not one, only the un finished portiort that he and the other reporters sucked at painting...oh by the way, his report was edited. Do you have a copy of his report in prose.? Print it ! No, he was speaking to Jeff Shapiro as an agent of the church, not as an investigator in the murder of JBR. He had no obligations to the public, only to God and his parishioners.

Oh, but he did have an obligation. If Shapiro was bearing false witness, publicly ruining another's reputation, and Rol was publicly made to support this, then, Rol had an obligation to set the record straight.

Be stupid all you want. If I was a player in a sensational, media-driven, murder, and someone misrepresented my words in a very popular book on this subject, I would set the record straight.

The conversation, quoted in the above posts, stands on record until Rol challenges it. If he has in the past, I would like to know.

Jeff Shapiro was a two-faced, lying b******. He probably changed the wording for Schiller. I doubt Father Rol has even read the book or heard about the conversation. He’s a busy man. No, it doesn’t indicate to me that he thought Patsy might be involved simply because he said “John’s case” instead of “John and Patsy’s case,” if did say that, and I doubt he did.

Learnin, other people don’t always act and react the way we would or the way we think they should. If that conversation took place, there could be many reasons why Father Rol never corrected Shapiro. If the conversation didn’t take place, there also could be many reasons why Father Rol never corrected what Shapiro lied about. Sometimes, it’s best to let things alone.

It really doesn't matter if Shapiro is the biggest scoundrel the world has ever known. The conversation, as quoted above, stands until which time it is disputed by the parties involved.

I thank you for your comments about the conversation. I don't completely agree with them but I respect your thoughts about the conversation.

According to the quote, Hoverstock took Shapiro to task for attacking John. Shapiro said that he wasn't attacking John, he was attacking Patsy. One would think that Hoverstock would then come to the defense of Patsy.

The reason Shiller included this conversation in his book is because of it's relevance in to the mind of Father Rol concerning this crime.

If Rev. Hoverstock was completely certain that his parishioners could not, and did not, participate in this crime, he would certainly have made it clear that both Ramseys were innocent and that Shapiro was clearly ruining the good name of his parishioners.

To me, this conversation has every indication of being authentic.

Does anyone think Shapiro made up the story about showing a picture of JB to Hoverstock and made up the reply that Hoverstock gave?
