What Do Obama's Death Threats Say About America?

What do you make of the chaotic environment surrounding President Barack Obama ? In the CNN appearance below, I am with Jamal Simmons , a former communications adviser for the Democratic National Committee. President Obama has, according to the CIA, received 400 percent more death threats than former President George W. Bush. This is only a surprise for those who don't know that America is still a racist country. When it comes to the threatening climate around the president, there are some thoughts that come to mind: 1)Are these threats due primarily to race or because people on the right simply dislike Obama's politics? It is difficult to believe that the tremendous lack of respect shown by Sen. Joe Wilson (the man who yelled, "you lie!" at the president during his speech) was not due at least in part to race. Wilson has been a member of an organization that links itself to those who have a fond regard for slavery (Sons of Confederate Veterans), and even if he is not racist himself, there is no question that racists stand with him against the president. There are some who are simply disappointed with Obama or hate all liberals, though. How do we know the difference between the two? That's what makes this problem so difficult. 2) Are those on the left turning against the president? The recent video making fun of President Obama on 'Saturday Night Live' could be a turning point in Obama's popularity with liberals. It seems that we are reaching the point where straddling the fence and reaching across the isle is making Obama look weak and ineffective. When your allies start making fun of you, that means you're in trouble. 3) What does this environment say about our country? What needs to be done in order for us to truly fulfill the dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? Have we really been doing the work or are we fooled into thinking that a couple of decades of superficial effort can remove the effects of the past 400 years? I argue that for us to really figure this thing out, we've got to do something innovative. President Obama can help with this challenge by supporting a national conversation on race. America really needs to talk about this.

I don't believe that America is any more racist than any other country.

Are there those who dilike Obama cuz he's black? Of course there are! But Obama was elected with a lot of white votes too.

Imo, the main reason for the "chaotic environment surrounding President Obama" or this country for that matter, is due to the sorry state of the economy. There are a lot of unhappy people who fell into chaos when they lost their homes, jobs or both.

I'm a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy and they don't ever talk about race or how great slavery was. They do a lot of the same things the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims do. I belong to these organizations mostly because they give out scholarships. The Daughters of the Confederacy give out the most. They are just lineage associations that place your ancestors at certain times in history.

But how do we explain why Obama has received far more death threats than his predecessor? Even how he's more popular than was George Bush.(In fact, and under reported story is that his approval ratings are back up to 56% after dipping this summer). So why is he receive 400% more threats than did the far less popular Bush?
And why has there been an increase in activity, including incidents of racial violence, against Blacks (sometimes other minorities as well) since the election of Obama?
The economy had tanked under Bush. The economy has been worse in American history than it is now (as least as far as popular suffering is concerned). Why didn't presidents receive as many threats then?
Racism cannot be excluded from the account of things. I don't know if it is true, as Dr. Manning Marable wrote in the 1980s, that the United States is the second (with South Africa as first) most racist country in the world.
And, as an African-American, I know and rejoice in the great progress we have made in the fight against racism and injustice.
But I must sadly state that whoever doesn't understand American racism, doesn't understand America.

The question is not whether these groups talk about race or racism, but whether in fact they are racist. That they identify with the slaveholding Confederacy makes their sympathies clear, as would some German Daughters of the Third REich (regardless of whether they talked about Jews or antisemitism).
One of great achievements of the 1960s is that our Freedom movement MORALLY DISCREDITED white racism, and hence it is not longer respectable to be OPENLY racist. But one can be racist without talking about it or wearing a white sheet. Hell, even David Duke now prefers business suits to white sheets and swazitkas that were once his favorite attire.

By the way, President Wilson was a staunch segregationist. Amirers of the Confederacy could be more comfortably public about their racism in those days.

I wonder what "leadihg blacks" were in favor of segregation. All the major black leaders in those days were against it as were most Black people as a whole.
YOur reading of FBI and other findings are quite unique. For decades they've shown that Blacks are OVERWHELMINGLY the targets of racial violence, and that most of the time the perpetrators are white. Furthermore, that is the way it has been for the past 350 years. You might want to brush up on both your history, post contemporary and more distant.

What the evidence shows about people like YOU is that you are ignorant, stupid and arrogant. Arrogant enough to ignore scholarly work even by whites which show the pervasiveness of white racism if it's not what you want to believe. Perhaps it offers you and unflattering mirror. And the reports by the intelligence community was not that threats against Obama were a novelty, but rather that the SCALE of such threats were extraordinary.
