Dan Savage's Anti-Bible Rant Only Hurts The Gay Rights Movement

Full story: Mediaite.com

This morning, California high school teacher Rick Tuttle appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss how his religious students walked out of a journalism conference keynote address given by Dan Savage , the famed gay rights activist/columnist. Savage spoke about anti-bullying, but spent a great deal of time bashing the Bible: People often point out that ... (more)

The writer seems to think that the mass exit of outraged Christians was spontaneous. Obviously, the rest of the students knew that the walk-out was staged. And the more students walked out, the louder the remaining cheered at Savage's remarks. This was a nice way of giving a big raspberry to the ever-so-precious sensibilities of the evangelical students.

It doesn't really matter what any one gay person thinks of the bible - the fundies and their backers have plenty of lies with or without that person.

Besides, saying the bible is full of bullshit is correct for any Christian or Jew EXCEPT those who take the thing literally. The rest of them realize it is a collection of mythology which must be taken with a grain of salt.

I really doubt Savage is going to change anyone's views, one way or the other, unless he is bribing politicians.

Savage got it right. You never see any of these bible folks, saying, "I'm going to discriminate against black folks 'cause the bible said so." But oh no, it's OK to discriminate against homosexuals because the bible said so.

"Black folks" (u still living in Alabama in the 1930's ?) aren't mentioned in the bible.

The bible does NOT say "it's OK to discriminate against homosexuals".

Did you ever actuallY READ any of teh bible ???

I think Dan's right. How many of those "pansy-ass" idiots that couldn't take a little Bible-bashing are going to show the same outrage at the next bit of anti-gay bashing they hear from the pulpit??

Will they walk out in protest? Or will they just sit there listening quietly and prove themselves to the hypocrites we already suspect them of being?

I have not seen how Dan is conducting his "anti-Bible rant". I know many people say the same thing to me but all I do is quote the Bible, a kind of Sunday School in Reverse.

Do we have anything of Dan on you-tube? I would like to see exactly what he is doing. Like using extra-biblical information or like me, never leaving the pages of the Bible.

I would always be happy to give Dan new or additional information to fight the fundies should he need any.

As a bisexual, out only to my wife, I haven't been bullied for being gay or bi. I have been bullied for being strange, intellectual, and odd in various ways, so I know what bullying is, in general. I also know that as a person with a Jewish father and Catholic mother, even though I'm not formally Jewish, I'd be gassed in a Nazi-run country, or if it got out I was bisexual. So, some aggressive comments by Savage seem to me a welcome relief, and a counterbalance, to the unbelievable and real savagery of anti-gay, anti-Jew, comments and actions throughout not only our country but the world. As for talking to high-schoolers, who else should he talk to? Adults who are already convinced, one way or another? I think his comments were entirely appropriate and in fact should have been made to an even younger audience. Think about the controversy about birth-control education, and the actual statistics... in countries with it, there are significantly less teen pregnancies and VD than in this country and others without.

Savage's using the word "pansy" was interesting. Homophobic and misogynist on his part, or deliberately gay baiting them?

I would have avoided that part.

Saying the buybull bangers don't follow the buybull in its entirety themselves is, of course, utterly factual and easy to prove.

I have plenty of experience showing Christians exactly where it is that their Bible fails them. Sure they yell, kick and scream about what they read but when the dust settles many of them are intelligent enough to realize that they have been deceived about the Bible being the word of God, error free and perfect for all practical purposes.

All one has to do is quote the damn thing. How easy is that?

No it won't hurt the gay rights movement. When Martin Luther King was mobilizing protesters, white racists used to toss out these same lame arguments. "Oh, these civil rights protesters will only create more racism!"

In some cases they did. But ultimately, they brough a great and deep-rooted evil to the surface. And yes, the Bible does contain a fair amount of bls---t.
