I am fortunate to live in an area where gay kids are pretty much accepted. The only gay kids that are harassed are the really flamboyant flamers whose "overdone" mannerisms actually invite ridicule when they're done in a general public setting. If a gay kid wants to be campy that's fine, but do it in a safe, gay setting and not at the mall or at school. It's annoying, even to other gay folk.
There was only one other gay kid in the 8th grade, but from what I hear there are lots more gay kids at the high school I'm moving up to in September. They even have a Gay/Straight Alliance club. I don't know how open I'll be in high school about my sexual orientation though. I'm just going to concentrate on maintaining my 4.3 grade average and staying out of everyone's way, lol.
Anyway THIS gay kid is a happy one so far. Gay flamers who flaunt their sexuality with flamboyant, in-your-face behavior are as annoying to other gay kids as they are to straight one. You'll never find me at a "gay pride" event or making a public display of my gayness other than online, anonymously. Because I repect straight people. And because I don't think being gay is anything to be especially proud of, any more than being blond-haired and green-eyed is.
