Vote for West Brighton Fire District's Future
#1 Jul 11, 2012
The West Brighton FD has hired one of the more well known fire law attorneys in the state. That along with the fact that the Town of Brighton doesnt even own the fire station on W. Henrietta Rd that they want to put Rochester Firefighters in.(The WBFD owns the building) I could see this playing out for along time in the courts. The goal of the West Brighton Fire Department is to form the West Brighton Fire District. A separate taxing entity made up of 5 Fire Commissioners elected by the public to replace the West Brighton Fire Protection Dist which the current town board oversees and are essentially the "commissioners" now. For better or worse I see this fire dist eventually being formed.

How do you run a fire department with a few volunteers and a few high paid drivers. Its insaine and dangerous. Woody's across from the fire department burned to the ground. This area has lots of commerical development and resturants. Its time to stop playing games and get paid firefighters.

Chuck, do you know the whole story?#1 this fire department has been around for 86 years and #2 did you know that the water mains that the Town of Brighton (who is trying to control the West Brighton fire department) maintains the water mains that not once but twice blew during this fire!

I think it may be unfair to solely blame the Town of Brighton for water main breaks at a large fire. That happens sometimes during large fires during large master stream operations. I guess the real issue isnt how old the WBFD is. The big question is the future going forward. West Brighton is just one of many volunteer fire departments that have faced challenges over the last 20 to 30 years. One question is how many trained interior volunteer firefighters are active with them and their ability to respond in a timely manner. If a tax based fire district is formed then as a taxing entity the fire district would be able to hire more than just the bare bone part time staff that is there. There are many different ways to achieve that goal. Right now the town board feels the best way is to simply contract out to the Rochester Fire Dept. But the flip side to that is where does that leave the West Brighton FD and the volunteers that they have. So its not a simple answer. West Brighton is actually fortunate because of their proximity to the City of Rochester and the Henrietta Fire District. If its a major call the other FDs are not far away.

Chuck, a couple of clarifications. The WBFD had 2 paid FF on 7/24. Not just drivers but fully certified interior firefighters. Part of Woody's burned down, but the inial call did not come through as a fire, because if it did, RFD would have been there a lot sooner, as they are already paid to respond to structural fires. In any case, 2 WBFD trucks with volunteers were already there, along with Henrietta as RFD arrived. Since a water main failed, it was Henrietta that laid 1000' ft of hose to another hydrant and main. Extra trucks were not needed. More water was. And, the town has known of water main problems in that area for years, but chooses to not make it a priority.
There are at least 18 interior certified volunteers and add that to the paid staff, you get another 18. Numbers continue to grow, but Brighton chooses to downplay that fact,, because obviously a deal has been struck behind closed doors. Add that to the paid response from RFD for structural fires, and nearby mutual aid for Henrieeta, we are incredibly well covered. Plain and simple, the town ignores or does not comprehend these facts, nor do they have the expertise in fire protection. A West Brighton fire district, run by knowledgeable fire commissioners is needed. The new agreement with RFD simply spreads RFD staff and equipmnent thinner over a larger area.

Point of Clearification:
The Town of Brighton does not own or maintain the water mains in West Brighton. The Monroe County Water Authority does.
Woody's DID NOT burn to the ground. The roof over the main room burned off; it was trimmed out on the interior with T&G Ponderosa pine. The remainder of the building is still standing.
