Good --- they police should arrest more of these scumbags. Drug dealers are just about the lowest form of human on the face of the Earth. They contribute nothing to society. However, the only negative thing about this is that now, the taxpayers will have to house, feed and take care of their medical bills for the next 20 years. Oh, well, that's they way it is.

So because they are nonviolent they should be allowed to continue to commit a crime? Selling drugs is a crime, don't believe me just ask the 19 people who have already been arrested. I'm glad to see my tax dollars hard at work to clean up my city/county. Can't wait to see the other 24 in custody. I'll gladly pay for their care if it keeps even one of them from trying to sell drugs to my kids. And who knows in the end maybe some become rehabilitated and turn a new leaf, begin a clean productive life. Sometimes all drug dealers need is to be shown a different way of life.

BethW, I don't believe that a first time non-violent offender should be incarcerated. There are plenty of other types of punishment that can be meted out to prevent this type of activities. I feel that we should reserve incarceration for those who commit violent or property crimes.
Yes, some people just need to be rehabilitated and can turn over a new leaf (I am a prime example - I was incarcerated many years ago for possession of marijuana and now have a successful career). But incarceration offers no rehabilitation (again I speak from experience) and in fact can be quite detrimental to any attempt to rehabilitate yourself.
And Dave Holland, please be careful with stereotypes... not all people who use drugs are scumbags... If so, then we have a choice this year of two scumbags and an old bag for President this year.

Don't even bother wasting your time trying to discuss this issue with nakedlobo. Since his arrest (for driving around with 1/2 pound of dope), he is now anti-establishment under the guise that he thinks his Constitutional Rights are being violated trying to justify and rationalize his addictive drug use. His profile says he is a crusader for our Bill of Rights, but as a Political Science major, he dropped out of school after only a year and is now an IT jockey wasting his employer's time posting daily to Topix. Then on another forum he thinks he knows more than the Michigan State Supreme Court...talk about some weak credibility! The guy is a complete MORON!!!

Sure, any man or women in this county with any brains knows that drug dealers should be off our streets,no doubt about it.But let me say that as i searched through the barrow county sex offender list and i see sex offenders doing no time at all it does lead me to believe that our priorities as a community are out of wack.Sure lock up the drug dealers, put them away as far as im concerned, but at the same time lets not lose focus on the real danger to our beautiful children.

fedup, you state that drug dealers should be off our streets. I don't disagree with you. But is incarceration the only way to get these people off the streets?
You make a great point that many sex offenders are not incarcerated for their crimes (which are a direct impact on another individual) while someone caught with a small amount of personal use marijuana is locked up.
I feel that there are numerous alternates to incarceration that can prove significantly more effective in decreasing recidivism.
And for nakedlobo sux, it is amazing how you can try to take a couple of posts from a few threads and think that you know me. You have no clue who I am or what I do... Although I am flattered that something that I have said (maybe it was my post that was a direct quote from the Bill of Rights that you "judged" to be nuts and clueless) offended you.

yes, nakedlobo you are correct. There are many other alternative avenues to help these first time offenders.first we need to address the fact that most of the people that are arressted forsales are no more than drug addicts that need help.but the fact is that our liberal view on this matter is a dying view, people only want to arrest, detain, andforget.i dont pretend to have the answers to be able to sway public opinion,i to have a first hand view of how the system works for first time offenders and let me assure the people that it is(the justice system)barbaric most of the time in these situations.
