Deaf man ruled fit for trial in killing

He was 17 years old and a Firestone High School special education student when he was arrested in 2003 on charges dating back two years, including the rape and murder of an Akron woman, sexual assaults against two other women and a voyeurism charge involving a 13-year-old girl.

The story doesn't state whether he can READ and did not imply that he was blind. If he can read, does anyone know if the court could use a version of teleprompter in the courtroom for the defendant?

The mother or other family members should be there to explain things to him too. So sad for the victims as well as how he was not taught to live in the world. I wonder how he went to school and understood there.

As stated in the ABJ, "A previous attorney said Johnson's IQ is 61". He MAY not have the mental capacity to understand and comprehend much of anything. I would hope that a trained and licensed psychologist will clarify this statement. Why was it quoted by an attorney? This is truly a sad story.

My point was, that as an obviously mentally impaired, hearing impaired and someone who is unable to speak, he is guaranteed a fair trial per the US CONSTITUION !!!

In addition, how did this jj get clear into high school without being able to read? What were the "educational professionals" doing besides ignoring him as he sat in class if they didn't even take the time to teach him ASL/Sign English? Even if he'd been taught ASL or Signed English as a way to communicate, it would be pretty hard to teach a deaf child to read because they're deprived of the chance to hear the words spoken.

What was the Akron Public School System doing, paying Ms. Cash or some other relative to be his interpreter in school?

Dude - take a deep breath and calm down !

I am a proponent of the death penalty. If he is found guilty, he should be put to death.

All I'm saying is that with a person like this, it's very tricky to prosecute successfully. All precautions should be taken to see to it that he gets a fair trial, so that the conviction (IF FOUND GUILTY) stands.
