Children’s book club says lesbian moms are “inappropriate”

Full story: lezgetreal.com

The School Library Journal is reporting that global children's publishing, education and media giant, Scholastic, decided not to include a book from its Scholastic Book Fair, because the company says one of the main characters has same-sex parents. The book, Luv Ya Bunches by Lauren Myracle, is about the friendship among four elementary school girls, and one of those girls, Milla, has lesbian moms. Scholastic has said it will refuse to carry the book unless the author makes some changes, such as removing a few words — “geez,” “crap,” “sucks,” and “God” (as in, “oh my God”) — and by writing out the lesbian moms. She has said she would be willing to remove the supposed offensive words, but refused to remove the lesbian moms. Myracle, no stranger to controversy, and has appeared on the American Library Association’s top 10 list of most often challenged authors, however the children’s book author says she is surprised that Scholastic would shy away from a reality that exists in numerous households across the country. Says Myracle, “A child having same-sex parents is not offensive, in my mind, and shouldn’t be ‘cleaned up.’”

Sounds like Scholastic is afraid school boards won't purchase their stuff if they publish this. Perhaps a legitimate fear on their part, as their will always be people on school boards who say "I don't want my children reading such filth."

However, they should do the right thing and be true to their stated goals.

FTA "The Scholastic Mission Credo notes...
◦To enlarge students’ concern for and understanding of today’s world
◦To help build a society free of prejudice and hate, and dedicated to the highest quality of life in community and nation."
So what part of their own credo don't they understand??
If the parents find the book offensive then don't buy it. Same as not purchasing an offensive video game or tickets to an offensive movie.

That's never good enough for the kind of people Scholastic is attempting to appease. They're the same crowd that isn't happy with having their kids opt out of sex ed classes; they insist that NO ONE receive sex ed in school. They aren't satisfied by the suggestion that books others might want to read remain on the library shelves, even if they don't approve of them for THEIR children. They are the same folks who are anti-choice for EVERYONE, whether said choice affects the rights of no one else but the woman who's pregnant.

They have nothing better to do than attempt to foist their superstitions and religious mumbo-jumbo on others.

I agree, I call it the Gladys Cravits syndrome, or the Busy-Body syndrome. My way at your house. These are the people who's gay sons and daughters kill themselves, or are complegely disowned by their families.

Scholastic is offering the book, as originally written, for sale as part of their retail service, but they rather ham-handedly insisted on these changes to the already published book, if it was to be included in their traveling book fairs. While inclusion in the book fair promotions would have increased exposure for the book, benefiting both Scholastic and the writer, the author was right to draw the line at making such a radical change to the book just to avoid potential controversy. While it's Scholastic's program to run as they see fit, all they managed to accomplish was to create a controversy by trying to avoid another one. In the future, they should just decide which books go in their book fairs as they were written and not try to be in the business of playing editor to other people's books...

I have known a good number of heterosexuals who were not appropirate moms; and this does not include all of those I read about almost daily in the newspapers.

In large scale politics these people are usually straight males. When it comes to schools however, they are typical uptight straight women who are super-anal. Probably because they don't get any action while their husbands are sucking c*ck in the woods :)

Scholastic is giving tremendous support to Luv Ya Bunches. In fact, our editors believe in this book so much that it is featured prominently on both the student and teacher covers of our December 2009 Arrow catalogs which are already printed and are in schools right now. On October 16 we also recorded a Book Talk Editors’ Choice Video which features Luv Ya Bunches.

The prominent promotion of Luv Ya Bunches in Scholastic’s Arrow December catalog, which has been distributed to 3.7 million students, affirms that the company is in complete support of this book.

Scholastic editors recognize Milla’s two moms as a positive and realistic aspect of the story. We offer other books with same sex couples and gay and lesbian characters in Book Clubs and Book Fairs including The Name of This Book is Secret, the upcoming After Tupac and D Foster, The Misfits, and others. Scholastic seeks to provide books that will appeal to a wide range of interests and reading abilities of children living in the many diverse cultures and communities we serve. Luv Ya Bunches helps us fulfill our mission to do that.

Scholastic is proud of its support for Luv Ya Bunches through its classroom Book Clubs. As we’ve said previously, Scholastic Book Fairs is working on firming up their Spring list and is considering Luv Ya Bunches.

Thank you for taking the time to express your opinion. Scholastic is very proud of its long history of helping children learn to love to read. We look forward to continuing to bring the best in children’s literature to communities across the country and around the world as Scholastic has done for nearly 90 years.

Thank you for the support. Just shows you how rumors get started. I've been buying Scholastic books all my life, and am proud to say that I have.
