Skin color results from the presence of the pigment melanin, an organic molecule that absorbs UV radiation and neutralizes free-radicals produced by UV radiation.
The more melanin, the more protection against UV radiation and the darker the skin. Hmm, if that is the case, why do not all humans have dark skin?Comments

I know there's a segment of society that disagrees with evolution on some aspects but how can anyone disagree with humans in various areas naturally changing to balancing vitamins and protection?

Then there are the moths in England whose color changed from white to dark over generations so they could be camouflaged when they rested on dark tree bark.
Sorry I don't remember the particular case, but it came up in a biology class I had about forty years ago. Same species, change in color over a short period of time. Maybe someone could help with this source, I tried but couldn't find it, and that textbook is long gone. |

pygmies eat less and you can fit more of them in a given area than you can the rest of humanity. why don't we all have the same finger prints. God made us all unique. if all canyons were (grand) and all art were the painting (the scream) that would be the end of site seeing and art, no? it's the differences that help us ask the questions that spur on science.

Wonder why the American Eskimos have dark skin while the Scandinavians have light skin?

i assume that the disagreeable one's you are referring to are the Christians, they believe that God man and the earth. why wouldn't He give man the skin color best suited to the area he would inhabit. |

Hi Vox, I ran an online search and found this:

Judged: 1 By the way, we are definitly NOT made in the image of God. To think that God must have an "image" is infinitly idiotic. |

Well, probably under 1% of Christians. We don't live in a country like most in the mid-east where science is hampered by having to be filtered through religious training. But, yes, I was referring to the 1% who want to invalidate evolution entirely because there are not explanations for everything yet. |
Great article! Shows we must be careful in our testing, and evaluating those tests. I felt as if I was in school again. I commend this site to anyone interested in the processes of natural selection, and also, in seeing how complex a careful study can be. Many thanks...... |

I am beginning to regard these TOPIX forums as little more than the sensational non-issues of the Enquirer. Anyone who has taken a course in physical anthropology would be well advanced beyond the scope of this article. Not all skin color is due to the presence of melanin. The total amount of melanin in the skin cell is only secondary to skin color, as the orientation of the melanin platelets in the skin cell is just as significant. What about the relative amounts of keratin in the skin cells? What about the effects of solar oxidation on hemoglobin in the upper capillaries of the dermis and epidermis? These variables were identified a LONG time ago as being significant in affecting skin color. The synchronistic attitudes reflected in these TOPIX forums do nothing to either advance knowledge or to educate. They only stir up petty and sensationalistic non-issues to incite a response. Unfortunately, these responses are the result of the gut-instinct foolishness that was spread by a system of education that is nothing more than the perpetuation of dogma and ignorance necessary to promote a skewed status quo.

Judged: 1 1 Not hampered by by having to be filtered through religious training? What planet have you been hiding out on? Look at your money!! What does it say? Were you forced to recite the pledge of allegiance in school? What did it say? This figure that you arbitrarily place at 1% is far greater than you can rationally imagine. It is more obvious that those who refuse to accept evolution are those masses that have not adequately evolved. |

While I usually agree with most of your insights Cash, I have to take minor exception with this one. While science research isn't filtered through religious training per se, I think that science funding (ie. stem cells), science teaching (EVO vs ID; abstinence only ed), and the dissemination of government data (global warming, pollution, health) is increasingly filtered by people with a religious/moral agenda. How many times during the last 7 years have we read about a government scientist who was silenced or about a scientific report being redacted by a politico with no scientific background (there was another exampled reported in the last week or so)? While not all of this filtering is because of religion, some of it definitely is. |

My college studies took place many years ago. Things have changed since then. A famous study of the Peppered Moth has been revisited with a better understanding of issues involved. http://www.arn.org/docs/wells/jw_pepmoth.htm This site, recommended to me by a previous post, is most enlightening. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and believe I learned from it. I'm indebted to the chap that showed it to me in the reply to my post. Aren't these "thread" meant for the use of all? Or are they just for the anointed few? Seems to me, learned as you obviously are, you could be a bit more tolerant. |

It's very simply all you have to do is standerdize melanin and give every body a shot Presto no more discentergration. vola civilation is saved. Ether that or paint every body one color. We all can't be on lollypop lane. And the only time i HATE moths is when they fly into my soup.Remenber a jackass of another color is syill a jackass
