'Mr. Raza:' Soft-spoken activist encourages others to remember ...

Full story: El Paso Times

Antonio Santos is not your run-of-the-mill rebel. Soft-spoken and often uncomfortable talking about his personal life, Santos -- "Tony" to his friends and colleagues -- has spent years transforming his tiny, cluttered office into a personal raza museum.

Both of these comments are sad. Really. Not only are they reactionary to a feature article, but they reflect a poor understanding of where we stand. The U.S.A. is no more a melting pot than is our military. Heck, even the NFL is catering to those you two attack. And, if this country is so great, I think you two might have received better lessons in writing. Proofread, amigos.

I agree. this guys a classic self hating sarro. anyone who is really happy and proud of the beautiful mix of their heritage, could totally be happy and proud to be an american, and be absolutely proud of that rich dark skinned blood as well. guess what?! I can be a super proud mexican -American. I can speak two languages, I can learn so much more from the world because i'm that beautiful mix. No, I don't have to go back anywhere, I was born here, as were two generations of grandmothers before me. hahahaha i don't have to change one bit, and its sad that you think you have to.

Why doesn't he really remember his roots and go back to Mexico and do something for his people and his country?

He's not doing a damned thing for his people by running to the USA, that he's doing for himself, it's the big money he really loves.

The sad posting is yours my ignorant friend.
You support Che Guevara and Pancho Villa?
You might want to read up on these two before getting so proud of their background.

So this "Mr. Raza" somehow came to the conclusion that staying in the barrio and showing the neighborhood kids his collection of Homies would set a better example than attending a prestigious university? Are you kidding me? Typical of these cultural warriors, though.

By the way, South El Paso parents, these little Homies figures sure are great role models for your kids, aren't they? For example (and these come from the Homies website):

Baby Mama: Baby Mama got some unexpected kids. The twins are named Lalo and Malo. Lalo is a little angel like his mama...but Malo is a little devil..like is Papi. Their Daddy disappeared after telling her he loved her and would be there for her if she had the baby. It was all lies, because when he saw in a sonogram that she was having twins he booked to Mexico.

Shady: A dark and mysterious Homegirl, Shady lives a shady lifestyle. Nobody knows what she does when she`s not around. What she does is strip at the local Gentleman`s Club, over by the airport. She does this to support her baby boy, and to pay the rent. Some of the Homies have seen her there, but don`t recognize her (she dances in an Aztec Costume under the stage name of Aztec Queen. The baby has a useless father that abandoned them both, and doesn`t pay her any child support. It`s probably better that he`s gone anyway, he used to beat her. He tried to put her on the street to work for him, like his other girls. She figures it was only a matter of time before he started beating on lil Shady also.

Right Eye: Right Eye was given this name by her Homegirls because her hair is always covering one eye. She is kind of a loose Homegirl and loves to tease the Vatos. She always leaves parties with a different guy. Although she parties and meets a lot of guys, she never really seems hapy. Right eye comes from an abusive home and has a negative view on life, and in particular, guys. She thinks they all just use girls. Right Eye has a small baby at home that she neglects...which pisses all the other Homies off.

And one more thing.... shouldn't "Mr. Raza" demand he be called something other than "Tony". After all, being called an Anglicized name like "Tony" doesn't sound like he's "resisting assimilation into the system" very much.

I agree with you up to a point.. I spent 10 years in the army and in many occasions I would listen to comments like "you wouldn't understand its a black think". then some whiter than white nuckle head would say I am 1/16 Cherokee Indian and 1/64 German with a last name of Jones. So being proud of your heritage is common in all of us but this Capitan Raza takes it to an extreme.

The President of the US never had any other job than "community activist". I think this guy realizes that it can be quite lucrative to be a bigoted rabble rouser.

Now that we know what his life has been and continues to be can we get a follow-up article that examines the results of his oversight of the "array of programs for South El Paso schoolchildren and their parents". Just what exactly are those programs, how have they helped, what are the positive results? He seems like a talented and well intentioned person, who has been given a job that allows him to collect his interests all while being a La Fe employee. What are the results??

I disagreed that the race card has been overplayed. This is a great country but there are so many wrongs that must be addressed and corrected if we want to make this country even better. We still have poor kids that are often labeled as too poor to learn and are never given the chance to succeed. They are never given the opportunity to make their dreams a reality. Who knows? Maybe one of those kids might discover the vaccine for AIDS or a cure for cancer.

Didn't he celebrate his "culture and traditions" at home? If he wanted to learn the history of Mexico, then maybe he should have asked his own parents or familiy. Did he think that classes should be taught in Spanish?

Hey Pedro. I present you with a challenge. Come here to Segundo and visit the great center this guy is running. There are computer classes, GED classes, citizenship classes, ESL classes, a recording studio, tutoring assistance, etc. You name it. I know because I participate in their great programs and services. Kudos to Antonio "Mr. Raza" Santos and Salvador Balcorta.

Happy New Year, Cancer! Are you ready to put those resolutions into place? Not quite?! Crustaceans are never quite sure just how much they can get away with and where to draw the line. You have a flair for the dramatic and when you're the narrator, your exploits become deeds that would make a knight proud. Your fans know you're a hero, whatever history might prove.
