Thank you, thank you, Dan Kujat! In this election year, it is SO important to be informed and to let our representatives know what we want from them. They work for us, and it is our duty to help guide them. Start with local events to be informed: Attend candidates nights to hear who can best represent you. Here in Deming there will be a candidates night on May 6th at the Learning Center starting at 5:30 PM. Be informed! Be there.

If these commissioners have taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitutions of the US and New Mexico, have they not just violated their oath of office?

Good response Dan. That would be my take on the issue. I believe the "victim" in this case is now the businessperson who was sued and that businessperson needs to "appeal" the decision of that court in order to insure that our complete system of justice is used.

Now on another local note, What do you think of the County handing over the domestic violence shelter to the Sheriff's Office? Do you believe the members of that fine organization should be employed as employees of the Sheriff's Office? Or should they become employees of Luna County?

To me this is a no brainer. The Sheriff should not be taking on individuals and orgainizations as members of his office as that places them in a position of having to certify through the state as police officers, and judging by the staff there, they should not have to go through that 26 weeks of training just to become a DV staff employee.

I applaud the County by supporting the financial backing of the shelter and its staff. However, this staff should be employed under a different supervisor and chain of command rather than the para-military organization of the Sheriffs office.

I would be more inclined if there were any organization in county government that should be a intregal part of the Sheriffs Office, it would be the jail.

In this event, it appears on the surface that the absolute power of the sheriff is becoming more absolute and the sheriff is meeting little resistance for his plan to obtain more power.

In my opinion, a Sheriff is an elected public servant and not a king and this current administrations rule must end.

Since your from Illinois and maybe not from here and you may not get the local paper or hear the local coffee talk, I can see where you may not understand some posts.
The County donated money to a domestic violence shelter to keep it running. Deming has a steady case of Domestic Violence cases like any city.
The politics here, the sheriff being one, volunteered to become part of the board of directors as an unpaid staff member along with the undersheriff. When the funds ran low, the county stepped up to the plate and fiananced it.
Then, Sheriff and Undersheriff, in order to secure more votes,(or more money in his pocket?) in the next election I suppose, moved to take over the management of the organization. Now, the sheriff and undersheriff have appointed a man named "Allen Carter" to head the Shelter. Carter is a deputy sheriff who has a history of being rude to victims who report crimes to the office. In another post on Topix just today, "Carter" has been pointed out as having a dislike for "mexicans" and "women".
The thought behind my posts go to the consolidation of power and control this sheriff and undersheriff have been conducting. They, Sheriff and Undersheriff, were found by an independant federal elections organization the "Office of Special Counsel" Investigator Claus Elfving, to have cheated and violated federal election laws in 2006.
I don't want a "KING" or a "CHEAT" for a sheriff. I want a DV Shelter, but one that is not controlled by the power of a political sheriff. Private organizations need private management. He should be supporting not "Managing or operating".
This sheriff and administration have already done that with a charity organization and morphed it into "Shop with a Cop" rather than "shoes for tots" program that used to be run through the local Fraternal Order of Police which, the FOP, is now at the sheriffs political call.
Now, my tax dollars pay for the same man, "Carter" to engauge in fundraising for the shop program, and now to run a shelter for women victims, and that takes him off the street and we have one less officer patrolling neighborhoods.
Just like I disagree with buying SUV and 4 wheel drive trucks over the past 10 years this sheriff has done that never leave paved roads for $30-40,000.00 each, that are used by all the patrol officers burning $4.00 a gallon gas this sheriff purchased, instead of buying V-6 gas or propane cars for patrol vehicles that get 30-35 miles per gallon rather than 12.
This sheriff & Administrators protrays themselves as kings, not as "Stewards of our resources".

Latest I hear is he (Cobos) finally got rid of the "gun shootn' knee capping SWAT team" that his LT "appointee" Alan Carter trained. Now I hear Carter is in charge of the domestic violence shelter.
