Why Gay Marriage Is Such A Big Deal

Full story: www.americanchronicle.com

In the grand scheme of American politics, the gay marriage issue seems like it should really be a footnote. It affects so few people, how could it be so important?

Gay marriage is the poster child for why we are a representative democracy.

The right has been very effective in getting votes that should not be taken for their wedge politics.

The Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965 would never have passed if the voters had direct say on race equality.

Thank God for the wisdom of our founding fathers who feared the mob mentality of democracy.

As Ben Franklin said, we have given you a republic, if you can keep it. I fear the GOP will destroy our nation in pursuit of their wedge politics.

old people are stuck in their ways and don't like change. they stick with old philosophies that make them comfortable, faith, family, a certain way of thinking. that's one segment. another is the religious right, they want the world to reflect the views they think are right and comfortable too. then there's the young, has anyone noticed that many of the young are uneducated? they still bully, they still hate, they're still clique-y. i was recently in a class where there were a lot of 17-23 yr olds. Out of nine students none of them knew who sigmeund freud was. so out of all these populations, who is going to care about our rights? face it, we're on the back burner. we scare people, we aren't like them. i will say this, if all the closet cases, including those in beard marriages came out, the general population would have to go on prozac.

I think there are a lot of people out there that just think they are denying us the right to tie the knot at a wedding ceremony but don't actually realize how many rights, benefits, and privileges of marriage that we lack and need. I just can't concept that there would be that the majority of people can be that cruel to deny us at ALL the BENEFITS of marriage. But suprisingly and not suprisingly they don't want us to have all the state and federal rights under the name Civil Union either. Religious people argue it's too close to marriage. What about religions that do accept same-sex couples? Don't they have a say in our government as well since our government listens to the Catholic Church/Pope and all the Southern Baptist and Pentecostal evangelicals?

Isn't the U.S. a Republic and a Democracy? Are we a Republic in some areas but a Democracy in others? I get confused with the two. I know it's not supposed to be legal for people to put minority rights to a popular vote.

Liberal churches that accept homosexuals are shunned and considered as being jokes by the mainstream community. Deservedly so.

I would never challenge your right to be treated fairly. As a matter of fact you always come across as a decent poster, and not as arrogant and hateful as most of your comrades. You deserve the right to be safe and respected as a person but I'm sorry...gay marriage is not an equal right.

For the American people to be forced to live with gay marriage although we disaprove of it would be tyranny. The gay establishment wants the court to decide it since they can't force the average Joe to roll over and take it. That would be judicial tyranny. The fact that most gays approve of this method illustrates the fascism that pervades the gay community.

and forcing gays to live by your standards is doing the same thing! fine give us civil unions but make them exactly the same as marriages other wise this issue will lead to us having marriage....and btw it don't matter what your church thinks of my church the fact is we have FREEDOM OF RELIGION!

And that is your opinion, an opinion that will one day be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

As an example, once in a while I do a quick calculation of what my federal taxes would have been if I could have filed a joint return (which of course I can't because I am not able to marry the person I love). It averages about $5000 a year. Times the 32 years that I have been in loving, committed relationships, it adds up. I'm paying somebody else's way here.

Just a few things that NOT being legally married can prevent you from: Health and Welfare benefits from your or your spouses employer, medical decisions ie. life and death circumstances in the event of a catostophic event, car accident, stroke, cancer. Child custody, adoption, life insurance payouts, SSI benefits and a civil union doesn't necessarily guarantee that you will be entitled, oh let's not forget the very recent mortage debackle by Countrywide Lending, and yet those are just a FEW f the many rights that are NOT equally afforded to us. If your partner is on life support, guess what the family can come in and say you have no say here and bar you from the hosital or any further decisions, I've seen it happen just a few weeks ago, so yes, we're just trying to ruin the sanctity of marriage by demanding equal rights.

Hey closet case, if you cannot keep your sexual fantasies from leaking out amidst your self hatred then I suggest a tune-up retreat at your local "reparations therapy" facility.

And by "reparations therapy facility" I do not mean your favorite fundie church's tearoom.

BTW, you're a defaming bigot whose sexually disordered rhetoric goes far beyond just objecting to marriage equality. Stop yer lyin fer jeebus, Cletus.

Trying to spread fear.
How exactly would you be forced to live with gay marrige? What would you be forced to do?
Go to a gay wedding?

People were "forced to live with inter-racial marriage". It was not voted in. Anything to say about that?

Why not a national vote? Afraid that the polls skewed to your advantage will be shown for the PR that they are?
