A real fan is someone who sticks by the team (not necessarily the coaching staff) but certainly the team) win or lose, and does not walk out of a game when the team is behind, and most certainly does not start leaving in the 3rd quarter when their team is in the lead. Sound familiar to anyone? I've sat and listented to "fans" complain and boo since the beginning of this season, and then on Saturday when they were finally winning, these same fans couldn't stay to enjoy the victory. I don't know that the last two games mark a real turn around for this team, I hope it does, but regardless, I will be in the stands showing my support. I also was very disappointed that so many fans could not even bother to get to their seats in time to see Anthony Poindexter honored. If he had not shown his true loyalty to his team and fans by returning for his final year, he would probably be playing in the NFL, making way more in one year than he will ever earn as a coach. Instead of going for the money, he came back, got hurt, and gave up the chance to be a big time star and ultra-rich. People could not bother to come in from the parking lot a few minutes early to acknowledge his sacrifice and his accomplishments. UVa will never have a great football team until they have great fans who truly to "bleed orange and blue." Coaches can go out and recruit quality players until they are blue in the face, but the atmosphere fans generate has a huge part in helping a quality player make a decision. If the fans are half-hearted in their support, that's the kind of player they are going to get and deserve.

I'll stay out of the politics of the coaching staff, but I do want to add a comment about people who make financial decisions for the VAF and athletic department. You did serious harm to your fan base two years ago when you told very loyal fans, fork over more money or move. Some of these people scraped for the VAF contributions they made in order to stay seated with people who had become friends over a number of years. When you pushed these people out of their seats, you pushed a lot of them right out of the stadium. Being a big contributor doesn't always make a person the best of fan. People who contribute a large amount of money think they are "owed" something by the University. People who come for the sheer love of the game are the true fans. Many of these people are now sitting at home on Saturday instead of filling the stands, cheering on the Hoos that they love.

Now it's time to refine and sharpen so we can make way for some upsets.

Good job Jameel and the entire team. You all played the kind of game we've been wanting, keep up the good work. Since it's been brought up I want to say something about what happened with fan seating. I know it's old news now, but the time will come when the decision will be made to do the same thing again. Our kids grew up coming to games, always in the same seats until they were finally put out of our reach. I guess the response from larger contributors wasn't huge because we were moved to other seats in the same section. From our new seats we could see our old seats empty for several games. Apparently the new ticketholders were only interested in the big games. During the 17 prior years when we held those tickets, the seats were never empty. If we couldn't come, we either sold the tickets or gave them to people who could come. Ticketholders who make the best fans aren't always the ones with the fattest wallets, they are the ones who come every game whether it's an ACC game or a team like USC, and they are also fans who stay to the better and bitter ends. Saturday I really felt bad for the team when they must have looked up in the stands at the end of the game and saw no more fans still there than at the end of the William and Mary game. If you are a ticketholder and can't be bothered with coming because the team isn't playing up to your expectations, I'm sure you know a family who would love to give their kids a treat. You'd be surprised at how many kids would just love to be there, even if the other team wins.
