Shocked at this news and didn't see it coming. I thought it was understood they were young this year and that he would be given more time to develop them. As for a replacement, I will be surprised if either Capel or Miller will leave their current jobs. For Jeff especially it would seem like a step down. I wouldn't mind Grant at all...young with a proven track record and I have never seen him lose his cool.

Gee, Boston College was last in the ACC last year. Thank Goodness their school had faith in their coach. Gee, Virginia Tech has only been the NCAA tournament once in six years, thank goodness their school had faith in their coach. By the way look how many times Georgia Tech has been at the bottom of league, and Miami and Wake Forest. And last but not least how about UVA football. I rest my case.

How Can you Fire Him after four years thats not enough time to build a program. He was just beginning to build his program. His team was young this year. Virginia was expecting a Miracle over nite. Cant get recruits that we need becuase Virginia Academics is set so High. No Matter who you bring In as Coach Its Not gonna change anything.

Why is he being given a $2.5 million "bonus" for poor performance. The last I checked, UVA is a state school and he is paid with some of my tax dollars. Why the uproar on the same thing on Wall Street? This is the same thing with the gross pay to atheletes to lure and than to repel when not performing. If this was in his contract why are we so annoyed with the bonus in the AIG contracts? Shame on you UVA where there are students that will not be coming in September due to finances. Students that in being accepted by UVA they surely performed and should be compensated, not a losing coach.

Get Tubby, pay him $2.5 - 3 and get on with it. His name brings credibility from the start. JPJ costs too much to sit half-filled. A sad commentary, but it's the real world of Div. I college sports. If Groh can't bring a winner this fall, he should be next, and maybe should have been first.

Virginia has to decide on which sport it wants to be its signature sport. Ask at Georgia, Fla St, or Florida, and football will be #1, and that said, two of those schools have had success in basketball, but football is their signature. At Duke and UNC it is basketball, and I submit that a football coach there can get a bowl game once or twice in four years, and unless there is a succession of losing seasons, that coach will have a fairly long career. So, if UVA wants Bball to be it, then go for a REAL name, and be legitimate year in and year out. If football is IT, then accept that Bball will have down years, but football better be in a bowl yearly and top 15 yearly. With few exceptions (Texas comes to mind), schools cannot be relevant nationally in both sports. My guess is UVA will still attempt dual relevance, and settle again, and this discussion will happen again after football this coming year, and Bball in another 4. 8-4 and 9-4 and 18-10 or 19-11 is NOT nationally relevant. It is nice but comments like national championships are not part of that equation. That said, being nationally relevant in one, and good in the other IS possible, and can be achieved at UVA.

Should we have any concerns about Tubby's age? The paper says he is 58 and to me that seems to be on the borderline in terms of having enough time to come in and build up the program to where it needs to be before retirement and/or poor health might come into the picture. I just think it would be wiser to hire someone (Capel, Grant, Miller for example) all of whom I presume have at least a good 20-25 years left in them.

Blame it on the coach does not work at UVA!!! You can bring in the best coach in the country from college or pros and you will still get the same rusults in football or basketball because they cannot recruit the same players that other schools in the ACC do!!! You just got rid of a good coach who will be sucessfull after he leaves here!!! A big waste of money that will not change a thing. Look at JEFF JONES fired at UVA now has 20 plus win seasons and team in ncaa year after year at American. Assit. football coach leaves UVA and goes to Richmond and makes them national champs. UVA is great in other sports year in and year out why because these kids are different than football or basketball players most fit in with the tough accademics. UVA is a ivy league school trying to play in the ACC.

So, He's paid $2.5 mil from a state school for 'resigning' when the paid employees for the same school haven't recevied a raise for over 2 years because of budget issues. What's wrong with this picture!!
