Yesterday's game was the coup-de-gras for Pac-10 officials. I have been a USC season ticket holder for ten years now and I have seen some rather strange calls from the zebras, but the debacle I saw Saturday was the final straw. There are three instances where SC was called for fifteen yard penalities where ND did the EXACT SAME THING and was not flagged.
1.) Barkely gets hit on his way out of bounds and knocked to the sideline. No personal fould call. I didn't have a problem with this because Barkley was still in bound at the time of the hit. Taylor Mays gets flagged for the same thing when he hit Armando Allen on his way out of bounds when Allen was clearly in bounds. How does that work?
2.) Everson Griffin gets flagged for taunting after a sack. I didn't have a problem with that call either because Griffin was taunting, and I also thing that Griffin is pretty much a jackass who does stupid stuff. ND linebacker Mantei Teo does the same thing after making a tackle on Anthony McCoy...no call.
3.) Taylor Mays gets flagged for a personal foul because he was leading with the helmet, although he never made contact with the helmet. Joe McKnight gets hit in the same fashion...no flag.

Maybe this is just residue from the gross incompetence of the Tom Hansen era as Pac-10 Commissioner, but the referring, not just in this game, but a lot of Pac-10 games, leaves a lot to be desired. The players work their tails off all year to play in these games, the least they should expect is a COMPETENT officiating crew, something that everyone is clearly not getting.

to Jack

first of all, i see that you did NOT identify where you live,BUT.judging by your comments about the officials
calling penalties on SC,YOU are probably an SC fan.
2nd of all, there WERE at least 2 circumstances where SC
committed fouls & were NOT called for them.
3rd IF YOU ARE an SC fan, get over it, because your team
won the game.
4th ND played a very spirted game & SHOUL receive CREDIT, even from
the USC fans! ND probably saved Charlie Weis's job!(for now)
and for EVERYONE out there that hates ND, which, i'm sure,
includes USC, YOUR beloved TROJANS have been given at least
4 or 5 games by the officals.
1964:ND called for holding on a TD (it was NOT holding!)
1981: USC scored a TD without the ball;a ND player recovered
the ball at the 3 yard line.
1982: similar situation as well
2005: oh, YES, the prima donna "BUSH" push.
also, in the 1979 ROSE BOWL, USC score a wwinning TD against
MICHIGAN, without the ball.
so, in closing, all I want to say is,yes,ALL teams get calls
that cost the other team, the game,BUT, USC (University Of
Spoiled Children) have been "extremely" fortunate.
p,s. if YOU want to rag on me, go ahead, but, i have
already (if you look on the site), CONGRATULATED USC.
USC DOES have an "excellent" team & we ALL know that
they do not get their just credit,(especially from people
in the South..
I rest my case. GO IRISH!(& good luck to USC the rest
of the way!)

the refs were bad, ON BOTH SIDES, what about when your LB #43 threw an elbow to the head of a defenseless ND receiver wrapped up?

I swear the Pros Refs call a MUCH tighter game than College, one would think it would be the the other way.

Why did U $ c run so much in the 4th Qtr.?, shyt they were passing at will, I know pete wanted to use the clock, but if your scoring at will in the air, why not keep putting points on the board? the clock will take care of its self it you keep scoring.

Good game to watch though.

Snowflake Jim, you sound like a petulant three year old when you KEEP brining up stuff from 30 years ago, let alone five years ago, so do us all a favor, go climb up a pine tree and commute with nature. Maybe you will be abducted by another alien spacecraft.
Manhattan Beach Dude, you validated my point with the officials. I was not only siting yesterday's game, but all games the last three or so years. The officiating is bad and getting worse just about every football Saturday. You are correct, the NFL calls a much tighter game than the NCAA does. My question being, why can't we get better officiating every game, especially in the Pac-10, who seems to be the poster boy for bad officiating?

couldn't agree with you more, college level refereeing is pahtatic.
maybe it's cause there are so many college games and not enoufgh quality ref's. The Pac 10 seems to be the worst, but we see many more Pac10 games than say SEC

Snowflake Jim sounds like he is jealous of SC and wishes he could have gone to such a good school.

to RWI in LA

I am NOT "jealous" of the SPOILED CHILDREN of LA!

I WILL concede that USC at this time IS BETTER than ND.

on the other hand, everyone says that ND gets all the "great" players.
I do NOT totally agree;yes, they do get some blue chip players,BUT, they don't have the talent that USC gets. their academic standards
have not allowed ND to be a very strong team every year & that, my friend is a fact. there are many schools out there that have great
talent & a number of these players would NEVER get into ND or any other school that has "strict" academic requirements.
would i like to see my time win many games every year & go to a excellent bowl game: YES. ND NEED to recruit very good defensive players & i'm not so sure that CHARLIE WEIS shpu;d remain as their
coach. they have the money as we all know & could easily buy him out. we'll see what happens the rest of this season.
**** as i mentioned in one of my posts:USC fans should be grateful
that they won but, also give credit to ND for their effort.
PEACE!!!!!!!!!!

Notre Dame put up a good fight to the end. That's the kind of football game I like, but I do not like how many penalties we are committing. How many trips to the moon could be made with all the yards we lost to penalties this season? Some of the calls were bad, but not all of them.

Yikes..thought i was the only one..to be sickened by the point spread whore's masquerading as football officials..I am a rabid SC FOOTBALL fan..is it asking for too much for the games to be called evenly??..if its a foul on one team then it should be on the others also..that way the players have to adjust accordingly..but to have the players dedicate themselves during the week in preparation & persperation.to have their efforts thwarted by sum desk-jockey who all of a sudden thinks the game is about them...is ruining what is an otherwise enjoyable past-time..case in point: the MIGHTY SEC..conference issues a report that after reviewing the replay:THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN NO PENALTY CALLED THAT HELPED FLORIDA STAY IN CONTENTION.!!!!FIGHT ON TROJANS>>>>>

That is 8 straight, i cant not stand channel 4, the home of the Irish they can never give the opposing team credit.I guess the officials felt sorry for ND and gave them two more shots to tie the game, two seconds i thought was only enough time for 1 PLAY ? Fight On Trojans!

there were bad calls on bothe sides of the ball, but I don't see any ND fans complaining, U$c won and played 3 excellent Qtrs. I still don't understand Pete going with the run in the 4th (I know he was running out the clock) with the receivers so open all game he should have just kept scoring. He let ND back in the game but running.
Was a good 4th Qtr to watch though

Conservative play calling almost lost us the game. Notre Dame took advantage and made the most of it. If I were 30 years older, I would have had a heart attack. Not a bad way to go when I think about it.

Daily Horoscope for December 10

Cancer

Someone dear to your heart isn't exactly a barrel of laughs today, are they? Is it your imagination or are they taking a perverse delight in spreading doom and gloom in all directions? If they've got good reason to be miserable then they deserve your sympathy, but even so it may not last for long. Try to keep active and cheerful, otherwise you'll also develop a tendency to brood.
