.

A Free Spirit to the end ----- He was just thumbing his nose at "fate",.... just as he did to Lombardi.

Another free spirit gone. He was one of that breed of players that made the NFL, without ever forgetting that no matter how much money was involved, it was still just a game. Now, we are left with nothing but the showboats and hot doggers in the NFL.

Max proved that you could be a happy go lucky human being and one hell of a football player at the same time. He worked hard, partied hard and left every place he ever spent time better for his having been there.

As a Bear fan, I do respect those Lombardi Packers. Max Mcgee stayed up the night before the Super Bowl partying with girls. He was still buzzed and hungover not expecting to play. Well they put him in and he had a legendary game. Football was more fun back in the day wasn't it!
I told my neighbor the other day to stay off of the roof, see what happens?

Yes, and I think sports in general
was more fun back then and Max was
part of it.

Make all the jokes you want. A legend has passed away and thats the best you guys can do, well let me help you: God knows all and sees all, and it was this man's time to go. May the family find comfort in this time of sorrow and remember the good times that he brought to them.

There are strange things done in GREEN BAY sun
By the men who toil for GLORY;

The LOCKER ROOMS trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;

The GRIDIRONS have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see

Was that DAY THAT HALFWAY SOBER
MAX McGee SCORED TWO TOUCHDOWNS
FOR LOMBARDI AND COMPANY.

Was penniless and hitch hiking from college to home for the weekend. Max picked me up and took me the 110 miles or so right to my front door. We had a wonderful time talking football and what some stories he told. This was in the off season of 1961 I believe and he was routing trucks For T. E. Mercer Trucking Co.which was an oilfield pipe co.. This was a ride from Natchitoches, La. to Jonesville,La. He went to my barber for a shave and haircut. What a ride!
