i'm originally from chicago and have lived in the austin area for 20 yrs, i can can tell you that there is much more racism in chicago than in austin. austin is a liberal oasis in tx. east tx is still behind but not austin. if you have a big boat with many people in it without hardly a lifejacket in sight, but lots of drinks, they will check your boat. many times. they are trying to catch people drunk.they(lcra and travis county sheriffs dept) do this all the time. especially in that cove. he should have expected this might happen. read the arrest statistics almost all white(probably drunken) guys.

thats just not the way it is out on lake travis. come down to devils cove in a large boat drinking with no life jackets. they will check to see if you are drunk and if you have lifejackets for all those on board. if you don't go along with them they'll arrest you no matter what your race is. overzelous? yes? but to everyone. everyone that goes out to lake travis knows this is a possibility. there just not making an exception for him. people aren't taking action because drunk boating has been a real problem at lake travis. especially around the summer holidays. just like it says in the story. maybe being pepper sprayed wasn't justified, we'll find out at the trial. they didn't try to beat him up he got pepper sprayed by a deputy that was intimidated by someone (benson) that by his looks could kick his ***. if anything gets the charges dropped that will be it.

Please. He drove up to a checkpoint and was nailed. Im sure the police 'put a case on him' in front of 30 witnesses. What is more believable to you people, that a pampered athlete was a drunken spoiled fool or that the police have a vendetta against black people? Jeez, i bet OJ's really innocent! Some of you have been smokin something silly!

Well, given the comments from the guy whose daughter was roughed up by this power-hungry group, I'd say that "sigh" is the one in denial.

Sounds as if Benson has serious grounds for a lawsuit on his hands, if the proof actually exists.

Actually, first-hand witnesses who are directly involved in the case are always suspect of bias. Not that they shouldn't be heard, but possible bias should be evaluated.

Oh well.. at least the beating was not on tape.. this is a joke..if in fact he is guity.. they have the right to take the boat and everything in it.. well not the crew..
The problem is you give these football, bball etc guys some cash and they tend to go a bit on the wild side.. remember ignorance of the law is no excuse.. I am sure this fine young man made every effort to learn the law before getting behing the wheel..LOL.. ya right..
If he gets busted so what he is a below average player.. if he does not perform.. cut him.. not for this incident.. but because of lackluster performance.. get off the guys case.. who cares!!! If they were caught drinking on the boats, they should be reprimanded. That's what the police do...

Of course they are going to deny it, even after the tests.
This is ongoing on every lake, and it's dangerous for those drinking and with them on the boats.

I agree, they should be punished for alcohol, while driving a boat of any kind. It's one way to hurt themselves as others.

I'm sure many will try to claim "picking on blacks"? I'm tired of that, regardless black or white, or? You do the crime, knowing better, then it's no ones fault but your own. So get a life, and go by the laws of "boating"..

White girls partying with black guys. Gee, that's really not uncommon. You can see that at lots of clubs these days. Why are some white girls attracted only to black guys? Hard to say, maybe some come from racist families and want to stick it to Mom and Dad. Or maybe they like the media-driven portrayal of black men as strong and virile, even violent and dangerous perhaps. Maybe the girls on the boat just like hanging around millionaire football players in the hopes of becoming rich by marriage. Or maybe they're just all nice guys and coincidentally happen to be black.

I am VERY sure that these girls don't hang out with black guys just because they're black, because wouldn't that be wrong. You know, associating with someone just because of their skin color?

I love it! You imply the Texas officers must have been mad to see white women on the boat. Why is it okay for you to make broad, sweeping generalizations about the Texas officers? Isn't that exactly the problem you are implying the Texas officers have? That since they're from Texas, they think a certain way?
