Bobby Knight's real reputation was the players (his players) that graduated from college. He had one of the top graduation rates. Yes, he was known for his temper, but that was the baggage that accompanied his passion for the game. He was fired from Indiana because he was both athletic director and head coach, one of the few in Division 1 NCAA. He had control on who would be invited to be on the team vs the alumni that wanted their Div 1 team to go back to the national championship by recruiting gangstas that would never graduate from college.

Farewell to perhaps the greatest college coach ever. His standards were above reproach, I doubt anyone will come close to match his graduation rate for players who stayed for the entire four year program. Sadly the game has become about money and less and less about the student athlete. I now live in Arizona and have to cringe when I read about Lute Olson's 23% graduation rate for his players and he is considered a God here among the boot licker's.

Good riddance. We need more coaches with million dollar salaries who bring in kids who don't attend classes and make the Final Four every 10 years, then bolt to another school for more money. Who needs a guy who gives back to the school, graduates players, and has won three national titles?

Something has got to be very wrong with him. He just signed a 3 year contract extension less than six months ago. Could he have cancer or some serious illness?(Cue the "he WAS a cancer" comments...)

Class act...leaving his layer hanging in mid-season.

Boo-hoo, I'm tired.

Although Bob Knight is a flawed person, as are the rest of us, he is definitely one of the best coaches ever.

We know darn well he ran a clean program as too many other coaches would have loved to turn him in were he not clean.

His players graduated and for the most parts were and became model citizens.

Finally, the vast majority of his players speak very highly of him. He cares about his past and current players and they care about him.

There should be more coaches like him and not as many like Sampson!

Yeah he chose players capable of graduating. Yeah, he was a winner. And, yeah he knew the game of basketball. But, he was and will always be a bully. No "teacher" should ever lay their hands on, publicly embarrass, swear at, or ridicule their students. And he's lucky that none of his players died from some of his ridiculous practices. You don't run kids until they vomit and/or collapse. And, they should be hydrated at all times. Hopefully, Pat Knight won't be anything like his father. Good riddance. He was coaching 10-15 years longer than he should have been.

You have to wonder if it is something drastic with his health. This strikes me as really out of character for him.

Given that he's been coaching since the the game was invented - prior to the the explosion in the number of players that leave school early to test the NBA - the fact he had a high graduation rate for 4 year players in comparison to recent coaches is misleading. And as for the idiots that defend him by saying he acts out of his passion for the game, why the hell would his "passion" cause him to throw things at other people's secretaries and bully female employees at IU? Face it, he's a first class a-hole that's been successful in his field. As a coach/human being he can't hold a candle to Izzo or Coach K. Hell, he's not even human.

A brilliant career that turned tragic.

For all his skills and talents, why didn't any of his mentors teach him manners and self-control.

It is a great relief to see him retire from BB in this fashion. I was sure he would end up following the Woody Hayes exit plan.

Let us all pray for his wife now. She's going to have the toughest refereeing assignment ever given.

OK. He was a bully at times. He had a really bad temper. No one disputes that. He admits he wishes he handled some things differently. So what?! All you people so quick to judge him, yet you know nothing about what kind of man he really is, except for a few bad moments during a very high-profile, very long career.

Unlike you know-nothings, I have known Bob Knight for 30 years. No one, and I mean no one, has more integrity than Bob Knight. He threw a chair. He's been rude at times. But he is a man of honor and integrity. And anyone who actually knows him will tell you the exact same thing. And, oh yeah, I almost forgot - he is one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time. But none of that matters because, oh my God!, he exhibited bad manners sometimes.

For all you people who've posted these vicious comments, all I can ask is, how would you be viewed if judged only based on your worst moments? Think about that one. Jerks.

Anyone know the REAL reason for the retirement? Are there health issues or something? I just can't imagine Bobby walking away just due to frustration.

@indycindyo:

I'd rather be a raging liberal than have a family tree that doesn't branch, live in a goddamned double-wide trailer with my obese wife and her mongoloid stepkids, and to do so in the most godforsaken of all places, the white trash Shangri-La known as the state of Indiana!
