He just finished the 1st year of a 6 year contract and they've extended him another 3 years. He's making over $900k now, wonder how much it'll cost in tuition hikes to pay him through 2015/16 for this salary and increases - or more likely how much it'll cost to buy out his contract when the LowBlows do a face plant as they alwways do?

Figures. One and out in the Not Invited Tournament and they extend him. It's just silly.

Welp, here comes another 105 years of nones of national titles.

Dimwits.

Typical premature actions on behalf of UNM Administration. Let's just fire Krebs instead...moron!

UNM dug its own grave with this deal. Get used to one and dones when and if UNM gets to future post seasons under this clown. Isn't it a wonder many nationally say that the minor leagues that UNM plays in is the only place he can enjoy "success".

I'm not so sure I agree with the quick extension, but I don't think you realize how much money good coaches can bring in to a university. even if it's "one and done" in the tourney every year.
The increase in attendance alone since mckay was fired has paid for the higher salary that alford has (including concessions/apparel, etc.).
If people should be mad at anything, it should be that UNM gets approximately zero exposure because the mountain west uses "the mountain" to broadcast its' sports. the loss in national exposure is going to cost unm a lot more that way. being on national tv (espn, etc) makes you much more marketable in terms of recruiting, students and in the long run research grants. ever notice how schools advertise how great their programs are during their games? if you advertise in a medium that no one uses, you aren't going to make any money. and yes, sports is a huge way for colleges to advertise themselves -- athletically and scholastically.
i could write a paper on this, but i'll spare you the boredom. point being, alford is paid way too much for what he does, but he's paid that much because he has the potential to make more money for the school than any other person working for the school. it's kind of a pipe dream model -- but it's a model that most schools are running on these days, and many are losing out on. you can't change his extension, so you might as well hope for him to be successful because if he is, it will help unm a great deal....and if not -- run him out of town like we do every other coach.
im out

Pretty bad decison considering how he typically tanks after the second year. We can hardly afford buying out McKay now we will more than likely do the same. Shame on Krebs.

A three year extension? Are you serious? Alford just completes his first year in a weak *** conference, losses in the 1st Round in the NIT, doesn't win his own conference and gets a three year extension? People in Iowa got rid of him for a reason. When he helps coach in some big time games and starts to WIN those games then I could see him getting more years but a wins against Utah and Texas Tech don't count. It is not like UNM beat someone from the ACC or the Big East! Come UNM just accept that you will always be 2nd rated basketball school in the nation. What big time recruit will pick UNM over North Carolina, Texas, Georgetown,etc.. Our state had to get Kansas' leftovers in J.R. Giddens. They didnt need him. Look they win a national title without a McDonals All-American and he could only get co-player of the year in the Mountain West. Come on now!
