Wow, a judge who actually dispenses strong and thoughtful sentences.

Kudos to him!

I also find it interesting that this judge made the statement "Wyatt's decision to lend her car, whether she knew Boles had a license or not, contributed to Leah Karp's death."

Since "knowingly" wasn't one of the parameters this judge worried about when it came to sentencing maybe he would be interested in being on the bench for Marco Sommerville's loaded hand gun at the airport case.

I think this is total BS.

so the person who committed the actual crime died so they had to punish someone? This seems like it should have been a civil suit not a criminal action.

so what would have happened if he had a drivers liscense and the same thing had happened? Would she have been liable then?

I feel sorry for everyone involved but I don't believe the owner of the car should be charged as she was not driving and didn't let him get in the car drunk.

''It is the responsibility of everyone in the community who loans a vehicle to another person to know who you are loaning your car to and make an effort to make sure they are valid,'' he said.

So, if I let someone use my car, its my responsibility to go ask the BMV if they have a license? I doubt they would even tell you that, in this day and age.

That's crap. I understand its awful, but in this case it seems that they just wanted someone to punish, and they got it. At least she won't be in prison for years.

Lets just say that one would hope that one would know someone well enough to know if they had a valid drivers license or not.( And insurance ) Plus, one would hope that they would know the other party well enough to know if they would drink and drive.( Not to mention do drugs ) If you don't know the answers to the above ... Then don't lend out your vehicle.

Senseless waste of taxpayers money, and the court system.
Why don't we put the car owners parents in jail too? Obviously, if they hadn't slept together, she wouldn't have been born to allow this horrible tradegy to take place...
This is a bit over the top... Since when it is my responsibility to monitor the behavior of my significant other?

"Chase said Boles, 22, of Medina, never had a valid driver's license and had racked up several suspensions over the years."

Sounds like a real piece of work ... One I would lend my car to anytime. Yea Right ...

I know the woman who loaned her car out, and I feel bad for her. It was a new boyfriend, he put on a good front, and this is the consequence. How many of us have dated someone who "tricked" us into believing they were better than they are? This guy bought beer and cigarettes and such in fron of the defendant, providing what she thought was a Driver's License (state ID) to the clerk. You have to feel crushed for Leah's family, but is this justice?

She voluntarily let her drunk and high boyfriend drive her vehicle when she knew he was incapacitated to do so. People whose vehicles are stolen do not voluntarily let the theives drive their vehicles away.

'Chase said Boles, 22, of Medina, never had a valid driver's license and had racked up several suspensions over the years'

So how come the girlfriend gets all the blame? The State obviously could not keep the guy from getting behind the wheel either, and they knew he did not have a valid driver's license.

UM... NO, BUT AT LEAST ASK TO LOOK AT THEIR LICENSE AND INSURANCE!! AND IF YOUR THE DRIVER, YOU ALSO SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE VEHICLE THAT YOU BORROWED HAS INSURANCE.

I WORK IN THE INSURANCE BIZ AND I'LL TELL YOU RIGHT NOW, THIS STUFF HAPPENS ALL OF THE TIME. IF YOU OWN A CAR, IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!! YOU ARE HELD LIABLE WITH ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN/TO THAT VEHICLE.

HER AND HER BOYFRIEND WERE IRRESPONSIBLE. THERE ARE ALWAYS CONSEQUENCES TO YOUR ACTIONS OR LACK THEREOF. IT'S A SAD STORY, BUT THEY ARE ADULTS AND THEREFORE, THEY SHOULD ACT ACCORDINGLY

I have Loaned my car to MANY different People Over the years.

Tons of different Friends and relatives. Our Truck has been used by everyone at one time or another for people to Move things.

NOT once did I check for a valid Drivers License. You Assume They can drive.

If Someone doesnít they will Lie because they are ashamed. ITs time fault lies with the person that does the wrong.

Come on America. Lets quit blaming and suing Everyone close to it. The owner of the car. The people that made the care. The parents for not teaching her right.

Lets put the blame squarely on the one that was wrong. In this case they paid with their life. A just deal in my book. Since they took a life.

At least he didnít walk away with out a scratch. To spend a couple years in jail for the wreck.

(They were angry that Wyatt would let her boyfriend, who had no driver's license, get behind the wheel.)(Wyatt said Boles was supposed to be out buying a birthday gift for a family member and picking her up after work. Instead, he passed the time at two Medina bars.)

It didnt say she gave her keys to someone that was drunk. He left and GOT drunk when he was supposed to be out shopping.

To everybody who has made negative comments, I want you to know that you do not have the full story. I am Leah's Aunt, the one she was coming to see when she was killed just 4 minutes from my front door. There is a written statement by Brandon Bole's grandmother that she sat Shay Wyatt down and told her that Brandon did not have a driver's licence and do not ever let him drive your car! This was not brought up because she pleaded no contest and never had to go to trial. Shay only received 10 days in jail (Judge Chase gave her 90 days but suspended 80 of them). The judge spent a lot of time on this case and was very fair to Shay Wyatt because she has no priors and is not a threat to society. Please stop saying hurtful things to my family. You have no idea what we have been through and what we will go through for the rest of our lives. Leah was a beautiful soul and she was brutally snatched away from us. Yes, ultimately Brandon Boles is responsible for taking her but the bars he was drinking at and the person who lent him his weapon need to take resonsibilty for their actions as well. To "Get Bent" that was an awful thing for you to say to my sister and brother-in-law. They will never sleep well at night because their only daughter is dead! The pound of flesh you are referring to is sick. Try looking at your child, your baby, lying dead in a morgue and tell me if you think they will ever feel any justice for what has happened.
