And unlike schools like Duke, Northwestern doesn't have recruiting classes for FB and BB full of athletes w/ near bare minimum NCAA academic qualifications.

And don't say "apparently you've never heard of women's lacrosse"... they may have one some titles, but I guarantee it brings in zero dollars. Even in academia, it certainly has the brightest population, its not leaps and bounds over other schools (Mich, Illinois). How can you call Northwestern not a real football program? They've won or shared 3 Big Ten titles in the last 13 years, that's more than any other Big Ten school not named Michigan or Ohio State. Go to http://www.bigtennetwork.com/blogs/blogs.asp... and educate yourself before you disrespect one of the founding members of the Big Ten conference.

It's named after Mary Ryan--the Evanston hooker with a heart of gold, who donated her life's earnings and diseased corpse to NU's syphillis center in 2003. Actually, umm...it's named after Patrick Ryan, chairman of the board of trustees in 1997 when he bought the naming rights. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Field_ (stadium) Do your research before you make claims like that.

On COME ON. Did you really think that person was serious? Hooker with a heart of gold? I love your little holier-than-thou admonition to do more research. You are so smart, S - M - R - T, I mean S - M - A - R - T. Hey Fred - that was funny! Hee!

I am a transplanted University of Texas Alumni. The Longhorns have 47 bowl appearances. How many does Northwestern have? How many national championships do they have?

For the record Longhorn: OSU has 37, Mich has 39. Illinois does have 15 (hey I'm an alum, gotta represent). The top off our conference isn't too far behind you... but you'd handle most of our teams pretty easily most years.

Of course Northwestern football is a tough sell. The person who stated they could stay home and watch SEC football on their big screen TV makes a great point. Perhaps people are realizing just how pathetic Big Ten football really is. Take away a couple of teams and the Big Ten is about as talented as the MAC. In fact, if you look at non-conference results over the last 10 years between the Big Ten and the MAC one might argue the MAC is a better league top to bottom.

But....I should make a disclaimer. I do hope the Big Ten and Northwestern can turn it around!

The only reason that he Northwestern is still in the Big 10 is that they are in the Chicago market and the Big 10 headquarters are in Park Ridge. As has been pointed out Northwestern is a great place for Illinois, Wisconsin etc. alums in the Chicago area to see their teams in action.

Hey, Illinois or NU, we're all Big Ten fans. Let's all unite against something deserving of our hatred, like Notre Dame.

Funny, then the SEC must "suck" as well, since the Big Ten has a .500 record against the SEC in bowl games during the past 6 years (and that's w/ the bowl games being virtual "home" games for the SEC).

Oh c'mon. Does UT have recruiting hurdles w/ regard to ACADEMICS? Besides, you're comparing apples to oranges (small, private university vs. large state school). How many national championships (much less conference titles) has Baylor (a Big12 private school) won? (Keep in mind that Baylor doesn't have nearly the academic restrictions w/ regard to recruiting that NU has). Not much of a point to hang your hat on.

Um, Northwestern BEAT TCU a couple times during that short series, so it's not like we dropped them because they beat us.
As for the Ill-whine-I ... Sweet Sioux's getting mighty used to staying in Evanston. Maybe the new trophy will visit Champaign once and awhile.
