Deflated Terps try to regroup

Full story: Baltimore Sun

Gary Williams will turn 63 tomorrow, but forgive the Maryland coach if he's in no mood to celebrate.

there were several problems with the second half play. coach put 4 replacements in at one time, to rest his starters. thats when the 20 point lead was reduced to 8 or 10 points. the missed layup by mcalpin really sealed the deal in my opinion. he is a walkon, and cannot make free throws, or finish a shot. why was he in there? i really believe when the first team was taken off the floor with 10 minutes to go, the team relaxed and thought they had won the game. they thought the 20 point lead was in the bag. when they came back out, they played not to lose. poor inside defense, no offensive attack. why not a zone at the end. they had one perimeter shooter, and that was ogolsby. landon milbourne was late getting in his face, and that was the game. terrible game, the whole season down in smoke because of coaching, and players lack of focus. vasquez, once again showed his gamemanship by attempting a three pointer from deep, instead of running at least another 5 or 6 seconds off the clock. then he missed the first free throw of 3 front ends one and ones. then he tried a running bank shot, again without running more time off the clock. how many years do the fans have to suffer through dumb basketball IQ.

This seems to be a reoccurring problem for the terps. They're playng good basketball, get the lead and Gary calls a timeout, gets them in a huddle and tells them "If you take a bad shot shot I'm taking you out". For the rest of the game the players do not want the ball and are afraid to make a shot. Gary, let them play!

Gary Williams has forgotten more about basketball than I know but every time this team chokes the same five players are on the floor. When do you try something different? If Greives Vasquez wants to figure out how to run the point and make a last second shot that doesn't look like something he made up in a wild game of h-o-r-s-e he needs to watch Kristi Tolliver.

I am a ball-hog, like to play out of control, and I like to turn the ball over as much as possible. My ball-handling skills stink for an ACC point guard. While I score a lot of points, I can be a detriment to my team in key situations.

Agree with everyone here. This team needs to wake the F up unless the NIT is good enough again

Gary's teams have been like this since he's been here. Not this bad, but the same choke mentality and inconsistency. Play really well one half and stink the next. Play really well one game (beat #1 UNC) and stink the next. Give up a 10 point lead to Duke in the last minute AT HOME. Have Duke on the ropes with a huge lead in the Final Four and choke and lose! Give up a 20 point lead with 11 minutes left with a spot in the tournament on the line.Players like Gist score 30 one game, then score in single digits for 3 games and then score a career high 31. It is Gary's M. O. and it ain't gonna change! He had one good year in 02 winning the national championship and I still say that team won it despite GW's pathetic coaching. 600 wins you say? That just means he's old. And routing for his teams is getting old!

Gary worked too hard to get the team back to competitive that it took everything he may have out of him
if he started over at another school with problems he will do fine but he is too old so we are stuck with a guy who can't handle the big time and big time players ..but he sure made a good living so you can't fault him there !
