Why play? Let us count the lessons

An English professor at the University of Akron took note of the hubbub surrounding a couple of columns I wrote about fairness in high school sports and declined to join the fray.

Dyers Writes: "Learning to work side by side with people who aren't like you, people you normally wouldn't associate with."

Dyers means: "Seperate playoffs. We don't assoicate with those parochial schools."

Dyers writes: "Sports also can provide the sheer joy of mastering a skill, the same joy one would derive from learning to be an accomplished pianist or sculptor."

and that’s why Dyer: "p&rp-walked the entire Walsh Girls soccer team by name, hometown and college selection, so to make sure that the hard work of these girls, their accomplishments and those who supported them, could not experience the same joy, but only to cloud their accomplishments, by claiming they had an unfair advantage."

Dyers should have written: "Unfortunately, most of the writers are far more focused on other things. And that's where the ABJ goes wrong."

You nailed it, Bob. There are some things that cannot be learned in a classroom. Also, sports, especially in high school, when hormones are raging, reduces stress. Since Phys Ed is no longer a required course in most schools the violence among this age group has increased beyond imagination.

most important of all, sports teaches a youngster how to "take it." how to take getting chewed out, how to take losing, how to take hard work, how to take following orders that are senseless, and how to do it all with a smile and yes, sir. it prepares people for the bs we have to sustain in the working world.

Grow up you spoiled little catholic baby. Stop inferring what you want to infer. You're a separatist by being catholic and attending a private parochial school. We're all separatists to a certain degree by our personal affiliations and choices in life. Bob Dyer could care less who wins a state championship and who doesn't. The gist of his article was about a "level playing field." What's wrong with that? Right away there was a collective catholic inference that this was some sort of personal attack. If catholics would show the same reaction to their "priestophilia" scandal then maybe the church and its victims could heal, and move on in life allot faster and with greater dignity.

Good job, for the most part. I was with you pretty much the whole way until the last couple lines. This positive column could have done without the negativity at the end.

Sports are also good because it help keep the kid's body weight down. Too many kids in USA, are fat. Some of this cause by poor eating habits, and sitting in front of the TV for hours. Sports are also good because it promotes teamswork, improves social skills etc.

Good column Dyer. Not up to y'alls award winnin' traffic reports, but it does cover some of the pros and cons of sports.

Keep us posted as to when y'alls daughters get drafted to one of those pro volleyball teams.

I have to agree with Beale that the parents are more to blame for the outrageous behavior of some of our young athletes, and this goes all the way back to T-ball! I've heard parents screaming at their little five year olds on the playing field. Who are these parents, the ones who couldn't make it themselves!!!! Good job Tom! I share your thoughts! It's long past time that academics came to the forefront!!

The schools should eliminate funding for any non-sport extra curricular activity. Art, band, choir do not bring in money. They do not teach the leadership skills that sports do.

Sports is America's lifeline. We should not have to pay to play for any sport. Pay to play is for the other activities. Schools should also ban bus usage for any non-sporting events. Another alternative to the ban is charge each student.

Support the sports

Art, Band and choir are credit classes. Sports are not. Non credit extra curricular activities should be paid for by the parents. I would rather my property taxes go for what they are supposed to go for, school books, not playbooks. I already raised my child and paid that childs way for everything extracurricular and you should too. Your child is your responsibility.
