UH won in trenches - Hawaii Sports

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Gordy Shaw called it "a good day's work." The Hawaii offensive line coach's understated assessment came after watching the Warriors produce a rushing performance that had the media relations staff scurrying through the record books to verify a bunch of "for the first time since ..." statistics.

A win is a win even if it was two crummy teams playing one another. Playing against a team of comparable talent, Hawaii is shoddy at best and crummy at worse. Don't get me wrong. I am elated with the victory but they must realize that their goal is to beat a team with a winning record. Geezus, Hawaii losing to Idaho....come on coaches....give me a break. Despite the criticism I will take, Hawaii needs to beat a team with a winning record and so, Hawaii beating a New Mexico State or San Jose, I am not going to get too excited. Now with Navy & Wisconsin coming in, let's see how Hawaii will fare at that level but like I said earlier, A WIN IS A WIN.

New Mexico St. epitomized the meaning of "getting clobbered." They managed a total offensive output of 62 yards against the Ohio St. Buckeyes; 40 yards rushing and 22 yards passing. You all know what a Buckeye is? If you don't, it's a tree.

Great Job Warriors! A WIN IS A WIN! That was great team work. Finally looked like a real united team. Moniz is really stepping up and taking control of the ball, and thinking much quicker on his feet. Enos is finally kicking deep, why they had him squib kick it...still boggles my mind. Its just best to get it down the field as far as you can right? Why kick it short and to the side when it has a high chance of bouncing out? I guess I just never see many kickers do that so often. Salas is really holding on to that ball tight and running faster than a panther! Keep it up guys you are all looking great! These are the Warriors I remember going to watch! Now we just need to hold on the rest of the season!

Desert, I don't think you are right about the Buckeye. The tree might be the Buckeye tree, but I believe the term "Buckeye" refers to the seed or nut that grows on the tree as it resembles a Buck's eye. In ohio you can even find chocolate "Buckeyes". Just my 2 cents.

Why work so hard to give UH a backhanded slap in the face? Just admit it, you will never be satisfied. If UH beats Navy and Wisconsin you'll say they were just lucky, or that Navy and Wisconsin had to fly soooo far. Seems to me that we had Cincinnati on the ropes last year before we let them off the hook. So nothing is impossible. Me? I'm a fan, I love watching the players make great plays, it's awesome. It doesn't matter wether its high school, college, or pros. We are in Hawaii, and because of that it's easiest to follow UH football. If you have problems getting excited watching UH football, then you can always take up another sport. Maybe individual sports would be more to your liking, possibly hiking, cycling, or ultra-distance running.

COACH, thanks for the update. I always wondered what a Buckeye was. The only reference I found was the Buckeye tree. It's interesting to know that it is the seed of the Buckeye tree that resembles a Buck's eye. What they did to NMS was hard to imagine. Allowed only 62 total offensive yards. Okay, what is a Penn St. Nittany Lion? I don't know and have yet to look it up. I did check out what is a Maryland Terrapin. It's a horned turtle. So if choosing a college nickname is based on something indigenous to Hawaii, then Hawaii should be the SURFERS. Wasn't it Duke Kahanomoku that popularized surfing and made it Hawaii's trademark?
