USC struggles might lie within depth perception

Full story: LA Daily News

It is not unusual for USC to lose two games by early November. The Trojans were an identical 7-2 just two years ago.

I see Pete is making excuses again. His O-line isn't producing at all. Everything starts there. Blocking is poor at best, and Bates play-calling is questionable.

ITS PRETTY SIMPLE YOUR BEST CHANCE TO STOP SC IS TO PUT 8 IN THE BOX AND GO AFTER MCKNIGHT AND BARKLEY. THIS APPROACH HAS BEEN IN PLACE ALL YEAR AND WILL BE SEEN IN THE NEXT 3 GAMES. WITH HAVILI AND MCCOY HURT....WHO DID BARKLEY HAVE TO GO TO??? REMEMBER ROJO WAS OUT HALF THE SEASON !!! JOHNSON ALMOST KILLED HIMSELF WEIGHTLIFTING... HE WAS HUGE RUNNING THE BALL ON 3RD DOWN !!!! THE 2 BACK UP TIGHT ENDS CANT CATCH AND 1 OF THEM DROPPED 2 TOUCHDOWN PASS'S....AND AS FAR AS THE O LINE HOW CAN 5 GUYS BLOCK 6,7 OR 8 GUYS !!!! SOMEONE IS GOING TO BE FREE TO MAKE A STOP OR PRESSURE BARKLEY

The OL was deemed one of if not the best in College football at the start of the year.

Offensive line has not performed consistantly through -out the year. I dont care who your QB or RB is.

USC has lost some major recruiting battles the past two years plus poor coaching.

HEY ROB JOHNSON.... WHO DOES HAVE THE BEST OFFENSIVE IN THE PACK 10 ????? ITS NOT THE O LINE'S FAULT IF YOU HAVE DROPPED PASSES AND THE BACK RUNS THE WRONG HOLE. PLUS O'DOWD GOT HURT AND WAS NEVER HIS ALL AMERICAN SELF...I DO AGREE THAT THE SC TEAM PROBALLY WAS OVER HYPED, AND THEY LOST SOME OF THIER TOP RECRUITS WHO ARE PLAYING ELSE WHERE... WHERE DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD BE IF NOBODY GOT HURT AND SANCHEZ FINISHED HIS SENIOR YEAR ?.... 9-0 AND # 2 0R 3 IN THE POLLS ?

I agree Respirato, this team was over hyped early on and anyone who didn't see SC in a rebuilding year after losing almost their entire defensive unit was kidding themselves. They have had a year that most schools would kill for and it's not over but let's be realistic 9-3 would be a great year although 10-2 would be better plus a bowl win too.
Lack of key injuries has been a key part of the success that SC has had over the past years but this year they have gotten bit badly but they will still represent, I think.

You failed to mention Stafon Johnson who is clearly USC's best pure runner. We also were without our AA Safety Taylor Mays in the Washington loss.

I think the bigger question we must ask is, are Carroll's practices too hard?
USC always has a long list of injuries. Don't agree?

Go back and look at the USC starting Defense for the Rose Bowl game against Texas.
Need I say more that the Ting Brothers were starting that game?

I'm not sure i would trade Pete's aggressive practices for softer ones, but surely this contributes to the toll year in and year out.

Not entirely true and the facts don't support your opinion at all. This O-line is good in the sack department and our top two runners are averaging over 5 yards a carry.
"Poor" should hardly be used to describe this O-Line. Underachieving maybe. Inconsistent...well probably yes. Poor? no...

EXCELLENT POINT.... I THINK THEY MISS O'DOWD...CASE IN POINT WHAT ABOUT THE 148 YARDS RUSHING SC HAD IN THE ASU GAME. ESPECIALLY WHEN ASU WERE ONLY GIVING UP 79? WHICH WAS AT THE TIME, THEY WERE LISTED AT NUMBER 9 IN THE NATION

GOOD POINT... IT SURELY SOUNDS LIKE THEY BEAT UP ON EACH OTHER DURING PRATICE. THE 2005 DEFENSE WAS NOT VERY GOOD AS FAR AS GIVING UP POINTS.... SC HAD TO OUT SCORE A NUMBER OF TEAMS THAT YEAR....THIS TIME OF YEAR ITS WOULD BE GOOD TO TAPER THE HITTING DURING PRACTICE

With so many play makers out, it is the reason why crafty (offensive) play calling is ever more so necessary now than before. We have to dominate the clock with more ground attack instead of relying on big pass plays, which will not work without the impact players. Unfortunately our running attack has been quite limited in scope this season, not because of the lack of talent in our FB and TB, but from a pass happy QB coach who may not utilize or know enough run schemes. The Fight-On spirit for our TBs isn't good enough when the opposing defense can stuff the box with 8 players.

I believe that in the month of November, they do ease up on practices (half pads), although I could be wrong.

Let's see: SC probably goes 10-2 and to the Sugar or Fiesta. OMG, the sky is falling! People, you make it sound like Paul "can't" Hackett is still here. Be thankful of an outstanding program that has been experiencing a massive turnover from last year's beasts. Give em' time and I guarantee they will be one the favorites in 2010. It would be nice to have the media in their hip pocket like the overrated SEC. If you have time, look up each SEC team and you'll see EIGHT home games and a disgraceful non-conf schedule. The only thing I would like to see is less of McKnight and more of Bradford. And to the poster that said SC has not recruited well, uh, they all don't mature at the same time. SC's recruits are terrific and just need experience. Got a feeling their going to take it to Harbaugh tomorrow.

I wish I could be as confident about tomorrow but Stanford is loaded and with Griffin out their D-Line will be good but not great.
I expect Stanford to be a little flat tomorrow after the Oregon game. Look at Oregon after the SC game.
I do agree that SC must establish the running game and not be so pass happy but with the A team receivers on the DL the others better step up...hear me BLAKE AYLES! Good grief gets some hands.
Like to see a good discussion by SC fans not overloading the praise but really looking at the team, what they have done and what we hope they will do over the next 3 weeks. Fight on!

You can't blame injuries on pc practices. Most of the injuries have been game related.
Pc and staff are doing a good job handling all the injuries this year. SC top 3 wr's have played not in a game together and won't until the bowl game. Due to the injuries SC has had to used their 4th,5th and 6th string wr's.
Getting havili and mccoy back should provide a huge boost for the offense.

Maybe Pete should be given blame as he is using an ultra-conservative offense to protect his freshman quarterback and his decision to start him, he has not been the gift Pete proclaims and maybe an 8-0 qb should have started. Injuries are a problem and it is not just the front liners who are injured but their backups as well, Never have I seen a worse decision than to play a hurt Corp against UW and then contemplate using Barkley as a replacement. Corp played miserably and Mustain may not have done better but obviously not wose than Corp then or Barkley last week, Make a change as you need to give all a chance.
