For the most part, teams in Conference USA, the Atlantic 10, the Mountain West and the Missouri Valley are content to be labeled "mid-majors." But lumping, for instance, Memphis , New Mexico , UNLV and Xavier in with schools such as Elon, Marist, UC Riverside and Youngstown State isn't really fair - to either side.
It certainly doesnt hurt the likes of Memphis to be grouped with schools whos teams are not competitive at the division one level.Memphis has been running up victories over unranked teams for years, and typically loses when they play outside CUSA.From time to time,Memphis has entertained the idea of joining a different conference,to enhance thier national recognition...only problem being,is that Memphis is a tier 3 academic institution, and in a stronger conference, theyd never be able to recruit like they can in CUSA...If I were picked to win my conference every year,do you really think Id care who else was IN my conference!?
