So we're spending more money on a facility that

1. The Vikings don't want
2. The Twins don't use
3. The Gophers don't use
4. No one can use until "Aug 1"
5. That everyone has said is obsolete.

Good use of taxpayers money.

Just get the Vikings a new stadium. This dung has been no more than a waste of money.

So now the Vikings have TWO places they can play.

They can play in the dome.

Or, they can play at TCF bank stadium.

Q. What kind of an idiot would advocate building a THIRD venue at a cost approaching a billion dollars?

A. Ted Mondale.

So the dome has about 450,000 sf and the unelected political hacks overseeing the place are spending $25,000,000 to replace the two teflon coated fabric. That works out to $60 a square foot, unless I'm a bigger fool.

A typical re-roof job for a Big Box store like Target or Walmart, is about $10 a square foot and for a Class A office building, is about $15 to $20 a square foot.

FM Global couldn't have irrational decision-making capabilities of the Metro Facilities Comm. when they insured this facility. They should have added a "stupid" factor. Maybe they did.

Obviously, the initial roof cost for the Dome is less without any steel framing other than the cables and some massive blowers and airlock doorways, but had anyone considered replacement costs, they would not have erected a bubble. Then again in 1979 they didn't install air conditioning knowing full well that the fans would demand it. All an attempt to get something erected on the cheap at the time with the knowledge that someone else would be stuck with the dregs later on.

On the other hand, anyone contemplating putting $25,000,000 into a building with no occupants in two years, should be put in stocks in public view for wasting natural and someone else's money.

Good thing you read the story!

Officials have maintained that nearly all of that money will be reimbursed by its insurance carrier, FM Global. The insurer has yet to officially rule of the claim.

"This building has been paid off (for) some time," Commission Chairman Ted Mondale said. "There are no taxpayer funds here."

I did read the story. There is a possibility that FM Global will deny the claim...am I right?

Don't you find it interesting that only ONE contractor bid on the project? Either no one wants the work or even they see it as a lost cause.

Either way they better hurry. There are Mexicans chomping at the bit to make those panels.

Please tell us more about the tax money being spent on the new roof for the dome. A sum of tax money like that has to be voted upon and appropriated by the legislature. A simple house and senate bill number will suffice. I'd like to see how my legislators voted on the bill to replace the Metrodome roof.

It will cost $25k for the deductible. That's it! Vikes are under contract to play there. It will be ready and no damn big deal. I'd kind of like to see them just yank it off and play without the roof, No structural damage would occur. But of course it would not be feasible with freezing pipes etc.

With that logic, the Vikings might win the Superbowl next season...

the only repair the metrodome deserves is several tons of well-placed dynamite and subsequent implosion. i don't care about the vikings. they can play at the University of St Thomas stadium for all i care. i don't care about the viking fans either. they're the most boring fans i've ever seen anyway.

And you believe him?

Yes....the building is paid for. That part is accurate. The insurance company is a business, and business tend to want to make money.

OK. So what IF FM Global denies the claim, who do you think will pick up the tab? Whether the money comes from the State, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MSC...taxpayers in one way or another will be paying for it. Nothing happens for free.

I can't help but think the city of Mpls should come to the table and MAKE SURE the Vikings stay in downtown Mpls. If Sid Hartman is correct that the City of Mpls makes $10 million dollars in tax revenue for every home game the Vikings play, that's $100 million a year (if they don't make any playoffs) they will lose if the Vikings leave. And if the Vikings stay and they sign a 40 year lease, that means Mpls will lose $4,000,000,000 (that's 4 BILLION DOLLARS) over 40 years if the Vikings go to LA (or elsewhere). That doesn't even get into what the State of MN will lose in taxes either but it's got to be close to that amount too. So we're talking about the State of MN and the City of Mpls losing over $4 BILLION DOLLARS over 40 years because they don't want to make sure the Vikings get close to ONE BILLION DOLLARS for a new dome. Now that's Democratic logic. Good going Dayton!

There wasn't any tax money used to build the Metrodome, they sold bonds. I don't know where the money is going to come from if the insurance claim is denied. Apparently you do not either.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Taurus

Get involved in financial transactions at your peril under today's Lunar Eclipse, because certain people will use them as a stick to beat you with. For instance, if you ask someone to lend you money they'll either make you feel guilty about it or dredge up all sorts of past instances when their trust was betrayed. You would also be well advised to avoid any show of possessiveness or jealousy, even if you feel it, unless you truly don't care about the disastrous outcome.
