Earnhardt (SR or JR) NEVER was the King of NASCAR. That title belongs to Richard Petty until someone breaks his record and knocks him off the throne. The only thing Earnhardt SR could break was his neck (by his own choice not to wear the proper safety gear) and the only "royal" NASCAR title Earnhardt JR qualifies for is the JESTER.

Earnhardt WAS the man. Petty is the King. Jimmie Johnson IS the man & the next "King" of Nascar. Just give him 3 more years. NOBODY has won 5 championships in a row. It took Petty bout 500+ races to win 5 championships. It took Johnson 300+ races to win 5 championships. I rest my case.

Even if he gets the other 2 championships (likely) and the 153 more wins (unlikely) Petty will always be The King.

The competition is much more competitve these days and it's harder to win races. But, we all know championships are the be all end all of a drivers success. In other words, when Johnson wins 8 championships than he will be the New King of Nascar.

Also, he's the Nascar King of Sports Illustrated being the only driver to be named Athlete of the Year. King of the Chase. Making the chase every year and most wins in the Chase. Should I go on...

Early days didn't come with zillion dollar race teams and 50ft motor homes. Drivers today have no earthly idea what the old school drivers went through to climb up the ladder.

The level of competition is not the same. I give credit to Petty, tho. He raced his ace off. Back then if you don't win you go back and fix and try to come out and win the next race. Today, if you don't win you're out. The level of competition is coming at you race after race.

My next door neighbor told me she would have crawled over one-mile of sharp carpet nails on her hands and knees just to hear Dale Earnhardt fart over a short wave radio. She said she would not do the same for Junior.

None of the Earnhardts have ever been king of anything. NASCAR will only have one "King". If Richard Petty hadn't gotten in to racing, NASCAR would still be running dirt tracks. Dale Sr. was a helluva driver but had he come along the same time as Richard, Richard would have wore his butt out.
