Most of the drug violence is near the border so why don't they head further south towards the resort towns where the money might be a bit better?

There were no Mexicans "here" in any part of what is now the USA - BEFORE the "anglos" (as you call "white" europeans), because Mexico did not exist until 1822, there were no such people as "Mexicans" prior to 1822. Mexican is a nationality, not a race, and not an ethnic "group".

The Spanish ARE "anglos" they came here from Europe just like the English, the French, Italians, Irish, Greek, etc....
Spanish is also NOT a "race", or an ethnic group.
Spanish/Hispanic is a part of the white (anglo), caucasian race, they came from Hispania, in Europe.

The indian tribes indigenous to what is now Mexico (Aztec-Mexica, Mayan, etc....) were also NOT "here" in what is now the USA.
The Aztec-Mexica tribal homeland was, and is 1,000 miles south of the existing US/MEX border.

Notice that Mexico did not extend above where the US border is now.
That was Indian territory.
And NONE of those tribes were ever "Mexican", or "Spanish".
