When in Rome do as the Romans do. As an outsider I think the matter could have been dealt with differently. Did he know the possible outcome of his actions (yes). Did he continue in spite of this (yes). So where do we go from here? This form of punishment is archaic and incomprehensible in western society, but in Somalia things are different. Hopefully, issues like this that reflect bad in the world forum will change for the better.

Wrong is wrong no matter what you are. Culture and opinion doesn't make it less wrong.

Hi Quinteshia, could you elaborate on your position a little more. I'm concerned that the same fate awaits the girl.

I'm glad I don't live there because This is what happens when you let children pretend to be adults and let them run things.

Well, I mean wrong in terms of human rights violations. And yes, I fear the same fate for her.

I'm a westerner and I've been living a Muslim country for the past six years and to the best of my recollection there has never been a stoning here. They have the death penalty for selling drugs. Possession will net you a jail term and a fine. My friend's sister was supposed to get the death penalty for selling drugs, but she was able to buy her way out of it and is now back in the community. The death penalty here involves hanging. Unlike Singapore, a hanging of a foreigner here can be avoided with cash, otherwise, if you don't have that they'll take you out back and send your body home later. Your appeal period is a matter of weeks (not years as in the US) and the decision is usually rendered quickly. So, if the death sentence is given and your wallet is thin, so are your chances of surviving. Stoning is not a Muslim thing but a law of the country, only there is no separation of church and state, thus Muslims in Somalia have to accept the terms of reference set down by the state.

The world got upset when they were going to cane a young woman in this country. Most of the Muslims here didn't give it another thought. Caning is a way of life among the population here. It was postponed until after holidays and then she was supposed to be caned at Pudu Jail. However, she violated a Shia law and Pudu is a federal facility, so the caning cannot be conducted unless authorized by a state judge. The debate goes on.

PS: there are two types of cops here. State police and Shia police. One secular and the other religious. There is continual conflict between the two.

I doubt it because they were both in violation of the law at the time. And, the law is very specific when it comes to the relations between men and women. Young women are fighting for change, but It's going to be a long hard struggle. Lets put it this way, if I say the wrong thing I'll be eating plain rice for a long time. Don't ever take for granted your freedom of speech.

This country is considered to be a moderate Muslim country but there are still difficulties with the government especially with immigration. Policies are built on shifting sands and you have to be prepared to go with the flow. An online Malaysian newspaper called Malaysiakini put it succinctly. "If the foreign workers are not happy with the treatment they get in Malaysia, they are free to go to any other country which might offer a better deal to them." As a tourist, by all means come and enjoy yourself (and Malaysia has a lot to offer)but don't forget that stamp in your passport because you'll need to renew it once. After that, it'll be like a wolf applying for a position in a hen house. On the other hand, if you marry a Muslim then you'll have to convert; if you marry Chinese of Indian there's no conversion problem. Either way you won't get stoned in Malaysia.

I guess that comes with being moderate. I have some friends who have fled Iran (actually there is a very large Iranian community in KL) and do not agree with what is going on there. The Malaysia government is supportive of Muslims from countries like Iran and Iraq, but the living conditions can be quite taxing for them because there is no social networking in Malaysia. Malaysia heavily subsidizes education for them.
