The greenhouse effect is caused by our atmosphere's ability to absorb heat radiating from the earth and then send some portion of that heat back.

Everything radiates energy at wavelengths determined by its temperature. The surface of the sun is much hotter than the surface of the earth therefore radiates energy at different wavelengths. The shortwave radiation from the sun, some portion (variable/changes) of which passes through the atmosphere heating the surface which in turn reradiates this energy but now in longwave form which some portion (variable/changes) of which is absorbed by the atmosphere and reradiated which some portion (variable/changes) of which is radiated back to the surface. WEW! The greenhouse effect in a nut shell.

The thing is the three variables above mostly change as a function of variables of water vapor or clouds.(Not exclusively)

greenhouses are damaging our atmosphere, so if we don´t stop them now we would suffer man disaster just like now is happening in Indonesia, New York and in other countries.

It's an overuse problem. Our modern society has evolved from an earlier stage when overuse wasn't an issue. It took a lot of work to accomplish anything. Today, we can hop in the car to pick up bananas that are flown in every day for our convenience. We can hop on a plane to sit around a resort in another country just for something to do. We can retire in good health, buy a motor home and drive around the continent to amuse ourselves. Everything is easy.

Technology and free enterprise have made things cheap and plentiful. But there's nothing in any of this to limit overconsumption. Quite the opposite. We have a thriving marketing industry to "create demand" and an Alice in Wonderland economy in which reduced consumption is a disaster.

The word "sustainable" is thrown about a lot. It means something. Why do we keep trying to sustain unsustainable consumption? Because there's nothing in our inherited cultures or economic structures to limit it.

GREEN HOUSE. Does'nt that conjure up memmories of the place you have been where plants are housed in a rather toasty place?

Some claim that there is a consensus about the "Greenhouse Effect" going to harm us by heating up too much.

Well exactly what has this "Greenhouse Effect" been up to?

In 1974 the "Greenhouse Effect" had produced an average temperature that was DOWN 2.7 degrees.

("another ice age-Telltale signs are everywhere-global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F... http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,9449... )

In 2005 the "Greenhouse Effect" has produced an average temperature that was UP 1 degree.

(From Alaska to the snowy peaks of the Andes the world is heating up right now, and fast. Globally, the temperature is up 1°F (.5°C) over the past century,http://magma.nationalg eographic.com/ngm/0409/feature 1/)

WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?

“Get out the fur coats, because global cooling is coming! A world-renowned atmospheric scientist and mountaineer, who has excavated ice out of 17 glaciers on 6 continents in his 50-year career, tells how we know.“

Professor Zbigniew Jaworowski is the chairman of the
Scientific Council of the Central Laboratory for Radiological
Protection in Warsaw. In the winter of 1957-1958, he measured
the concentration of CO2 in the atmospheric air at
Spitsbergen. During 1972 to 1991, he investigated the history
of the pollution of the global atmosphere, measuring the dust
preserved in 17 glaciers—in the Tatra Mountains in Poland, in
the Arctic, Antarctic, Alaska, Norway, the Alps, the Himalayas,
the Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda, and the Peruvian Andes.
He has published about 20 papers on climate, most of them
concerning the CO2 measurements in ice cores.
This article, in a shorter form, appeared in the Polish weekly
Polityka on July 12, 2003.

the ideal temperature is what Al Gore says it should be, and it is measured in the vicinity of his an*s.(or Uranus, if you believe him).

Uh, Pamela, New York is not a country.

And let's crack down on those pesky greenhouses!

the greenhouse effect is something which allows us to exist. without it earth's temperature would fluctuate between about -150C at night and 100C in the day time, like it does on the moon. the greenhouse effect is an important passive energy entrapment mechanism which can be best described as an increase in a planet's specific heat capcity.

Actually, science DOES NOT have much certainly concerning most of the multiple factors that may contribute to what is considered the "green house effect". We are dealing with a dynamic number of climate forces, random events, and cyclical weather issues affecting climate stability. All of the variables that influence global climate change are not even known to put forth a comprehensive theory for action planning. This is not a realm for political simplicity and expediency either.

Assumptions, correlations, probabilities, and weak global climate theories are not scientific facts to bet the ranch on, get sweaty over, or to base haphazard and costly governmental actions. Nevertheless, cutting known greenhouse gas emissions substantially from known benchmarks would be a good place to start - and persist with for the next two millenia or so.

Significantly influencing worldwide weather and temperature patterns by human intervention is akin to Don Quixote musings and tilting at windmill foes. Sorry to stab the do-it-now tree hugging activists with a reality knife. As Butthead often remarked, "Settle down Beavis."

The greehouse effect is caused by the accumulation of hot air coming from all the would-be environmental experts who want to sell books and make movies touting how smart they are. Someone should figure out how much Gore's private jet and his SUV's and huge mansion adds to the
problem.[Oh don't worry! He planted a small tree in his front yard to offset the carbon debt.]

Not to mention the influence and effects from solar changes that we are only begining to research.

I see the distinct correlation too.
