In an attempt to get rid of all these threads about emos and bashing them, I hope this thread will take off. At least it has relevance to the subculture.
So what is your favorite part of it? The romance? The beauty of romance? The mystery that most Goths possess? The fascination with beauty in all its forms? The music, art, or literature? The openness towards others in the culture? The mindset of those in the culture? I'm sure some people may go a little deeper than I have on this.....but I think I hit the key points about what attracts people to it. Besides its something to talk about...trying to switch up the main feel to this forum. |

While Goths represent a large cross section of te population, there is one unifying thought process that I really appreciate. The best way to explain it is to compare life to the yin-yang symbol. The vast majority of mainstream culture will only acknowledge the light. Any hint of darkness is to be ignored or suppressed. Goths, on the other hand, actively explore the entirety of life, both the light and the dark. For most Goths, ignoring the darkness in the human experience means ignoring a large part of what makes us human. From my perspective, Goths live more of life than most. I for one appreciate the thought. I really hope this is the beginning of a new chapter for this forum. Elitism and hate were never "virtues" Goths aspired to. - Heretic |

I just ran across this topic again doing a web search on the subculture. I am really surprised it never took off; I would have thought people would have more to say on this subject.

Goth sucks.

That is a shame that this thread really didn't take off. You think people that are "part of this subculture" would have at least something interesting to put here. |

yes we suck. We suck lollipops, candy canes, suckers, popsicles just like everybody else. Well what attracted me to the gothic culture was how everyone's open minded and acceptable to other cultures. Not only that but how everyone's also intelligent as well. I've learned alot talking to goths and also I have gained alot more confidence in myself than before. |

Not nearly as much as people who worry too much about a subculture that could give a rip about them at all. Please. Grow up already, would you? - Heretic |

They hide like spazzes and wesr black? That's what happens when a naive 13 year old shares his opinions about something he doesn't know or understand. |

Spoken like my 10-year-old daughter. I rest my case. Spoken like someone who has been living under a rock for the last 30 years. Obviously, you truly have no idea what it is you are talking about If you're going to be a troll, at least make it sporting. Sounding like a moron takes all the effort out of it. We'll never have the chance to show you for the idiot you are if you do all the work yourself. - Heretic |

While I said that you don't know what you are talking about, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Admitting ignorance of a subject, then making the attempt to educate yourself about it, is the mark of wisdom. If you want to get a better grounding on what the Gothic subculture is all about, I recommend reading two things. First, I ran across an essay several years ago that does a very good job of placing what we know today as "Gothic" in its proper historical context. You can read that essay here: http://www.mygoth.com/index.php... Second, the philosophical underpinnings of the subculture comes in large part from the philosophy of Romanticism. Wikipedia has an excellent article outlining this philosophy, which you can read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism Where I come from, people like me were referred to as "Darksiders" long before the term "Goth" made it across the Atlantic. I am a married, 30-something African American professional living in Minnesota. Based on appearance, I do not fit any Gothic stereotype. I am, however, a long-time Goth. As most Goths will tell you, the subculture is a philosophy, a state of mind, NOT what you look like. What you may know about Goths, and what you have seen of this subculture, is probably not much more than the stereotypes you see on television, in school, or at the mall. I'm here to tell you that there is much, much more to it than that. Read the information available at the links I posted as a start, then look for more information on your own. Avoid poseurs and those who believe "Goth" to be nothing more than a fashion statement, and talk to people who are actually a part of the subculture. It is always better to form your opinions based on knowledge than it is to rely on stereotypes and rumors. - Heretic |

I really enjoyed that article, even though I'm still quite a young lass I understood perfectly. I get told all the time you're not this or you're not that because of how I dress (Wow I don't wear black =O) and its great to see I'm not alone on this |
