Great Topic ! Young man !

You can now see as to how west looks at India. Its a picture perfect description as to how India is.

QUOTE
The bitter truth is Slumdog Millionaire could only have been made by westerners. The talent exists in India for such movies: much of it, like the brilliant actor Irrfan Khan, contributed to this film. But Bollywood producers, fixated with making flimsy films about the lives of the middle class, will never throw their weight behind such projects.

Like Bachchan, they are too blind to what India really is to deal with it. Poor Indians, like those in Slumdog, do not constitute India’s “murky underbelly” as Bachchan moronically describes them. They, in fact, are the nation. Over 80% of Indians live on less than $2.50 (£1.70) a day; 40% on less than $1.25.

A third of the world’s poorest people are Indian, as are 40% of all malnourished children. In Mumbai alone, 2.6 million children live on the street or in slums, and 400,000 work in prostitution. But these people are absent from mainstream Bollywood cinema.”

The contributor goes on to add,“Bachchan’s blinkered comments prove how hopelessly blind he and most of Bollywood are to the reality of India and how wholly incapable they are of making films that can address it.

Bachchan gave one of the worst English-language performances in cinematic history with his embarrassingly stupid portrayal of an ageing thespian in The Last Lear. Having failed miserably at cultivating a western audience, it must hurt him to be so monumentally upstaged by white folk on his home turf.

Well said !

It is true that Amitabh Bachchan sounded like a Lungi when he wrote out the following:

QUOTE
“If Slumdog Millionaire projects India as Third World dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations,” UNQUOTE

Who these nationalists and Patriots are ? According to Amitabh Bachchan ?

A contributor on guardian.co.uk, Film Blog, their own John Voxx ;-), retaliated to Bachchan’s statements in the blog. The contributor wrote,“Even that old iconic Bollywood blusterer, Amitabh Bachchan, has thrown his empty-headed two rupees’ worth into the mix.
Bachchan is no doubt riled, as many other Bollywood no-talents will be, about the fact that the best film to be made about India in recent times has been made by a white man, Danny Boyle.

I'm NOT sure why AB is getting upset. India has billionaire, millionaire, etc but when my plane lands in Mumbai international terminal, the view from the window is very pathetic. It's like pointy pointy towers and than slums. The area between Mahim and Bandra stink like hell. All I hear is development plan for past 10 years.

HIDING OUR PROBLEM IS REAL PROBLEM ITSELF. Why people aren't talking about development of slum ?

WE ARE ALL INTO HIDING OUR PROBLEMS. WE HAVE TO REALLY ADDRESS IT.

Nothing below 60%...thats the minimum I can state to sound good! The number crosses well beyond (80 -85)% if you take people living in chawls and Foothpaths into consideration!!! and I ain't exaggerating for sure! Around 5000 individuals migrate to Mumbai every week from all over the country! How can you expect it to be clean! no ways!

Yes..Desi and what you mentioned is the biggest concern! I dont know why Indians like to live in delusionic state of mind all the time!...
Yesterday! I had a chat with one of my friends in Germany and he proved convincingly that on a global Stage India simply doenst counts!! and we blabber about turning India into superpower along with 1/3 of worlds poverty and 40% of malnutrished future generation!
I feel sad that even with such exposure Indians are not willing to stride...By and large I've found we Indians are Lazy and want all the luxuries without all the hardwork! I thank all of those who made slumdog millionare possible..Dont miss it! It indeed is one of the finest movie made in recent times...the first movie I liked after TZP! I am confused whether to laugh or cry over the plight of Indians!

PAKISTAN: Poverty forcing families to put children to work
28 Dec 2008 05:37:26 GMT
Source: IRIN
Reuters and AlertNet are not responsible for the content of this article or for any external internet sites. The views expressed are the author's alone.
LAHORE, 28 December 2008 (IRIN)- "My only wish in life is to have a decent meal with my family at least once a day. Everything else, even my personal dignity, is now a secondary issue," said Muhammad Rafiq, 35, at a brick-kiln in Lahore, capital of Punjab Province.

Until February this year, Rafiq ran a cycle repair workshop. But he said rising inflation left him unable to pay the rent. "I fell into debt, couldn't pay back the Rs 80,000 (about US$1,066) I owed, and finally everything I owned was taken away by the person I rented my tiny shop from," Rafiq told IRIN.

Left with no choice, he has taken up work at a brick-kiln, moulding bricks from clay and helping to bake them in the kiln. Unable to afford school fees any longer, he has also put his three children, all under 10, to work.

His wife helps lay out the bricks in the sun to dry. "All together, we earn about 7,000 rupees (about US$92) a month. I am sad my children will be illiterate, like myself. I tried my best to send them to school. But now we must make food our priority," said Rafiq.

There is as yet little data on the social impact of rising food price inflation. But the evidence suggests families are feeling the pinch. The government's Federal Bureau of Statistics Consumer Price Index (CPI) put annual inflation in November 2008 at nearly 25 percent.

Poverty rate in Pakistan soaring: Shaukat Tareen

Islamabad, Dec.16 (ANI): The advisor to the Prime Minster on Finance, Shaukat Tareen said on Tuesday that the poverty rate in Pakistan is climbing, and at present, it stands at 28 percent.

Addressing a seminar here, Tareen said government’s top priority, at the moment, is to bring the rate of inflation down to nine percent.

The seminar was held in collaboration with International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), The News reported.

Tareen said previous governments had ignored important sectors of agriculture, production, human resource development, education and health which are key to progress.

Speaking on the occasion, State Bank Governor, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar said that the growing rate of unemployment and poverty posed greater challenge to the country, which needed to be addressed.

You are right. Pakistan is lot more behind us in terms of education, economics, industries, etc. PAKISTAN IS ALMOST 100 YEARS BEHIND INDIA.

Pak has such a bad reputation that no one will even do business with them. Pak's industry is very small and even Iran, Afghan, etc prefer doing business with India than Pak.

Pak doesn't belong in elite g12 which India is now member of. Pak is such a disgrace that most Paki people here claim that they are Indians. Pak is NO COMPETITION TO INDIA but India has to look at China if we want to grow up into super power.

ON ALL MY THREAD I MADE IT VERY CLEAR THAT INDIA IS LIKE A HUMAN BODY AND PAK A COLD VIRUS. THOSE VIRUS/TERRORIST CAN'T CREATE UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATION FOR MORE THAN 3 DAYS.

THERE ARE ABOUT 3 MILLION ILLEGAL PAKIS LIVING IN BOMBAY, IF YOU SAY THEY SHOULD BE EMPTIED OFF THAN EVERYONE CAN AGREE WITH YOU.

Indian Muslim born in India have all the right to live in Bombay as any other people. OUR AIM IS TO THRASH THE TERRORIST AND ILLEGALS OUT but if we ADDRESS IT TO ALL MUSLIMS WE'LL LOSE THE FAVOR OF MODERATE MUSLIMS TOO.

India has 160 million Muslims and they aren't going to evaporate in thin air.

My family/friend who traveled to Hyderabad said the NEW Hyderabad airport is better than SFO(San Francisco) airport.

Bombay is heaven if you compare Southern Bombay, Juhu, Bandra, etc but than it's a hell when you compare the area east of Mahim.

BOMBAY IS MORE COMBINATION OF HEAVEN AND HELL. BOMBAY DEFINITELY DOESN'T LOOK 25% CLOSER TO SFO AIRPORT. Also, Mumbai police should be one of the most corrupted once. They take bribes and allow people to build slum everywhere. Unless you live in a closed gated community there are slums surrounding every building.

I feel pretty pathetic that Bombay public don't complain about this illegal slum activity. There are poor people every where. That doesn't mean they can fix their cardboard boxes and build home in all the govt/private properties. This again goes back to the corruption in the system. Is anyone even addressing it ?

We are being too blind.
