This festival has grown better and better over the last few years into one of Southern Illinois finest. The family oriented feeling reminds me of a simpler time when parents felt safe to let their kids enjoy themselves. The new carnival rides were very clean and the operators wore nice clean company shirts. A wide variety of food vendors and drinks kept everyone satisfied and coming back for more. This festival is almost entirely free all weekend. From the almost continuous live entertainment to activities every age group can enjoy. How many other venues can boast this? I urge everyone to stop by this yearly event and take part in honoring the most beloved cartoon character of all time. Popeye the Sailor Man. Always the weekend following Labor Day in September. These days, Free is a word everyone can get behind.

Eaglesfest outdoes popeyes picnic anyday. And either way, its just a reason for all the alcoholics in chester and surrounding areas (there are a ton) to get all drunk and act like asses.

Oh mighty Chester and their festivities. One is no better than the other really. More people show to the Picnic but more underage drinking goes on at Eaglesfest. Both are all based on booze. Chester's #1 source of income of course.
According to "Popeye Fan" parents can now concentrate on getting smashed rather than the well being of their child!
